What are your thoughts on Dr. Ranson's confidence nightmare over whether or not to perform surgery on Maggie, who has a brain tumour? It was an appropriate way of helping him to fit in with Tuscany life but was the drama glossed over too quickly?

Well Maggie got sorted in the end, this was the main thing and Michael Ranson performing the surgery was a nice touch, albeit a whirlwind put to that point.

Maggie and Chase are in a romantic encounter in the winery, just as Dr. Michael Ranson appears, (a scene from season 3, 1983 - '84):

He says to the two lovebirds, "Hey, you're supposed to be making wine, not love."

I think the brain tumor storyline was created for Michael, not for Maggie. It gave him a reason to stick around.
Too bad he died in the plane crash, he would have been great as Tusany's resident doctor à la Michael Rossi.

But then again, viewers expect some dramatic results from the cliffhanger tragedies.

I felt bad for Emma when the feeling wasn't mutual from the Doctor. As far as Michael's career was concerned he was one of the nicest in soap land and deserved to get it back on track.
