Why did the producers have no idea how to do "upper class"?

I think what he's trying to say is a "little less like a pastel nightmare induced by too much acid".

Yeah, but this is an 80s version sense of class - my parents did the whole black/white theme to have a sense of class and... it didn't work. This seems very noveau riche.

It's vaguely Art Deco but that just doesn't work. Art Deco can not be vague. That's like saying vaguely vivid.

    That's because that's not what I said.:D
I didn't say they did it so they would look wealthier. Just that Americans accept upper class portrayal as long as upper class are shown to be "just like middle class but simply with more money."

Or maybe they simply couldn't be upper class because life was too soapy.

Or maybe the producers just didn't have it, hadn't even seen it and so couldn't fake it. I've seen inside the Spelling mansion.

Well that's just as well as Dominique doesn't sleep in her clothes or with her clothes.

And just how authentically upperclass was the family of Downton Abby? They were aristocrats for heaven's sake and yet they were even more likeable than the Carringtons.
Where's the fun if you're not being watched?

It's easier for the British to convey it than it is for Americans. Which is why the British on DYNASTY and THE COLBYS seem to do it better.

I think that had something to do with Julian Fellowes being willing to laugh at himself and his show. Maybe.

Where's the fun if the naked person is absolutely hideous? ...and I just reminded myself of "Friends" and how they always stared at the "Ugly Naked Guy" across the street.

The actors, yes. One of the reasons Anthony Minghella chose Jude Law for THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY was because Minghella couldn't find a young American actor who could convey a '50s class sense, but felt a British actor might be able to because the British still remember their own rigid class system. Which made some sense.

But in terms of the productions, there have been numerous American films which did a perfectly good job of conveying a three dimensional upper crust thingy. And DYNASTY would have been far better if they'd remembered how after its promising start.

Apples and oranges. DYNASTY was a top five show (and even #1 show) on a US network in the 80s, during the time when networks were all there was. Downton Abbey was the top rated PBS show (a pitifully watched outlet in the US, so being popular there is as dubious a distinction as being voted "least obese") .Plus, Americans have no problem seeing the Brits have different social classes on TV.

Of course it would have, but that is not what they decided to do. I think eliminating the Blaisdels and making the Carringtons less unapproachable (which was the point of having the Blaisdels and Krystle in the first place) was part of the Dynasty reboot at the time

I think the Alexanders of SAVANNAH looked like upperclass (until things became a little silly) but if they had decided to focus on that family ("look inside their house", to use Esther Shapiro's quote) the result would have been the same i.e. they also would have become more approachable.

Without that distance and contrast, it simply doesn't exist anymore.

A lot of it's in the direction and even the actors' body language -- although the script can obviously help. An American film, like, say, REVERSAL OF FORTUNE could do it.
