Did Gary and Val choose their house or was it Miss Ellie?

I read that that area is in the top 10 of cheap places to live in LA. Although very nice, was Miss Ellie being a bit of a cheapskate?

Knowing Gary's love of the land and horses surely she could afford a nice Californian Ranch.

Miss Ellie felt guilty for not doing more to help them against JR, as she said.
I think the modest home she bought them was more David Jacob's desire for his original idea for a show about economically average families.

Bobby's construction company owned some houses in California, Miss Ellie saw a polaroid of some on his desk, and that's what gave her the idea.

She might have thought a big responsibility like that could send him off the deep end again. As Valene said the previous year, "He's over his head with a shopping cart in front of him."

she did it so they wouldn’t have to call his spinoff show Whistling Meadows or Windsorbrook Prairie or something like that.

And Ellie mailed him a porcelain dog. Just to complete the gesture.

If I had been Valene, I wouldn´t want to touch any piece of furniture where J.R. might have been...Maybe Sue Ellen also sent them the following year their bed, you know, the one where J.R. and Afton got to know each other better...Maybe that´s why Valene said to her that out-of-character line "Once a beech...": because she got some STD from that bed...

I thought Gary and Val had then picked out the house on Seaview Circle from those polaroids?

You might be right. All I know for sure is there were definitely polaroids involved!

Miss Ellie could have bought them a Beverly Hills home. Gary taking cocaine with Hollywood Celebs, Val trying to fit in with the wives of the rich and famous, inspiring her book 'Hollywood Wives'.

Lilimae turns up played by Debbie Renolyds, and tries to use Val to make connections in Hollywood.

Val and Gary divorce after Gary is papped by the press in bed with a Hollywood actress.

I would have watched it. Although it would be cancelled after one season

Ellie bought the house as a (second) wedding present, based on property that Bobby had in his portfolio.

She saw the Polaroid of the available properties and said they can choose whichever one they wanted. At at the end of the episode you saw them come out of the house they had chosen....queue spin off....

Well, he got one four years later, thanks to Jock dying.
And she particularly looked at the one that they ended up choosing.
Ellie gave them a choice of houses and said that they would fly to California with Bobby and choose one that they liked. And she said that if they didn’t like any of them, she could find another. Fortunately they liked the one that Ellie had gazed particularly at, because the episode had to finish on time and Knots Landing was starting the following week. Especially as the advert for that Dallas episode mentions that Knots Landing is starting next week. Gary says that the place is called Knots Landing and Bobby says that they can move in about a week but I’m still trying to decipher the hidden meaning behind their comments. Especially as Jock says on the following night’s Dallas that Gary is doing fine in California, nearly a week before we see Gary move in.
When Ellie asked Bobby if they were nice houses, he assured her that they were. He may have been lying. Although, it is a house in a fictional location. So fictionally, it might not be as cheap. Things aren’t always as close to the beach as they pretend to be.

In the beginning I had the impression it wasn't overly close to the beach as it seemed like a day out. But then Val would do her daily run it felt closer.

Then of course Abby moved to be right near the beach. Where was her house?

The opening credits in most years started with a shot of the ocean, then panning to nearby houses. Early episodes emphasize that it’s a beach community, such as a season 1 episode about some gang terrorizing the neighborhood, and a lot of it takes place at the beach.

That's only for Seasons 1 and 2 with the birds eye view of the ocean/beach and then moving to the cul-de-sac and panning to each house on Seaview Circle. Seasons 3-8 had a shot of the ocean much lower down followed by the cliffside, then a fade to black and a right-to-left scroll of "Knots Landing", the actors and some scenes they were involved in, which is the most famous of the opening title sequences. Seasons 9-10 had a painting, with a slower and more soothing version of the title music. Season 11 was on a beach with sandcastles, and the only title sequence without pictures of the stars, just their names. Seasons 12-14 returned to a style similar to Seasons 3-8 for the 1990s, only now with a faster pace and the pictures on a wooden panel instead of blackness.
