I'm glad he is getting the penalty for this crime! Good that he didn't just get off because of his celeb status!

Former England captain Wayne Rooney has appeared in court and admitted drink-driving.

He was arrested when police stopped a car in Wilmslow, Cheshire, in the early hours on 1 September.

The 31-year-old was banned from driving for two years and ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community order.

Rooney was also ordered to pay £170 when he appeared at Stockport Magistrates' Court.

The Liverpool-born player rejoined his boyhood club this summer, 13 years after leaving for Manchester United.

The father-of-three is also England's record goalscorer.

Yes. The unpaid work he's been ordered to do seems very fitting. Who knows, it could even be an opportunity for growth and some much needed humility.

Wayne Rooney gets paid £250,000 a week. What's the point of giving him a fine at this level? He earns more than that in 10 minutes.

Glad to see he is banned, but there should be consistency with driving offences
Why does Kirsty Gallagher get off with a much lesser fine and ban
It should be across the board

    Exactly!
It should be based on a percentage of a person's earnings. Having a set mandatory fine is never going to act as a punishment when the pay scale between people is as ludicrous as it is.

Even so, given his public profile and earnings - £170 fine is a bit pitiful. Plus how do they determine 100 hours unpaid work around his salary?

It won't affect him, he won't lose his job and will most likely make use of a chauffeur for a couple of years.

I'm going to take a guess that he won't be digging up plants or working on some roadside. Probably more about training young lads some football skills.

That crossed my mind too. I don't know how these things work, but I really hope the he's given no choice about the kind of community service he does. He's a physically able man so there's no limit to what he can do and I think it needs to be punitive as a deterrent to others. I also think it should be something that puts him off the radar and gives him minimal opportunities to make social media posts spinning his community service to make himself look like Jesus.

I suspect you are right, though. He'll probably end up doing something he enjoys that gets him plenty of photo ops and adoration.
