It's been done for the Dallas top 10s, and now it's time to have a listen to all the prime time soap characters.
We've already done the singers so it doesn't have to be the most beautiful voice, maybe you prefer a peculiar of funny voice, or the voice that was the most suitable for a particular soap character.

I'm not gonna overthink this. I will choose the 5 speaking voices that my ears like best (and that I can remember without YouTube or dvds).

    1. Krystle, Dynasty
    2. Donna, Dallas
    3. Melissa, Falcon Crest
    4. Jeff, Dynasty
    5. Clayton, Dallas

    1. Sable Colby
    The Colbys

Elegant and with crystal clear enunciation, Sable is right up there with Fenella Fielding and Joan Greenwood in terms of velvet.

    2. Caress Morrell
    Dynasty

The feline quality makes her very easy on the ear. It's so enjoyable to hear her purr innocuous phrases like "I adore Beluga".

    3. Kenny Ward
    Knots Landing

Controversial a choice as he may be, his voice sometimes had a sexy "broken" quality, as though he'd been shouting too much or was just recovering from a bad cold.

    4. Blake Carrington
    Dynasty

It's Charlie. Charlie! Need I say more?

    5. Ava Sumner-Galveston
    Knots Landing

Such a great sound. You can tell she chain smokes.

    1. Titus Semple - FLAMINGO ROAD - He had such a powerful and authoritative voice that could instantly switch to being menacing. Even the way he ordered coffee in a café sounded threatening.

    2. Zachary Powers - THE COLBYS - Ricardo Montalban, what more do I have to say!

    3. Emma Channing - FALCON CREST - there was a naïve, sweet innocence about her voice, with a touch of being slightly deranged, all of which made her sound very engaging.

    4. Lilimae Clements - KNOTS LANDING - Sweet and innocent voice one minute, switching to being tough and determined the next.

    5. Renaldo (Naldo) Marchetta - DALLAS - Mainly for the way he said "Jenna" and "Charlotte".

Special mention for Douglas Channing (Falcon Crest)/Scotty Demorest (Dallas), both played by Stephen Elliot, who also had a great voice.

    1. Adam Carrington - DYNASTY
    upload_2019-7-31_21-35-45.png
At his best, a voice that could make anything sound like poetry. At his worst, pompous and theatrical. It was the quintessential "Dynasty" voice imho.

    2. Julia Blake - PAPER DOLLS
    upload_2019-7-31_21-48-53.png
Brenda Vaccaro's trademark husky voice never fails to entertain me, and it definitely upped the camp factor of her Paper Dolls character.

    3. Lady Ashley Mitchell - DYNASTY
    upload_2019-7-31_21-55-0.png
As a Dynasty character she failed massively, mostly because of how she was written (and all the things she couldn't or shouldn't do). But Ali MacGraw does have a beautiful speaking voice.
It sounds gentle, articulate and controlled, it's something about the way she "rounds off" her sentences, I think.

    4. Sean Rowan - DYNASTY
    upload_2019-7-31_22-17-3.png
He may have been too hot and dampy for his co-star, but his voice is cold as ice, maybe the most sinister voice I've ever heard in a prime time soap.

    5. Mort Tubor - KNOTS LANDING
    upload_2019-7-31_22-26-16.png
As a supporting "commentary" character he acted mostly with his voice, and his slightly drawn-out approach was the perfect tone for the cheeky office-sleazeball.
Actor Michael C. Hall has that same quality in his voice (I think).

    1. Holly Harwood(Dallas). Very sexy and soothing.
    2. Donna Krebs(Dallas). Strong, intelligent, yet at the same time, gentle.
    3. Caress Morell(Dynasty). @Mel O'Drama described her voice best. I loved listening to her speak.
    4. JR Ewing(Dallas). The inflection, the delivery, JR could be a hoot and menacing.
    5. Sue Ellen(Dallas). Nobody could pause or emphasize the right word at exactly the right time as Sue Ellen could.

    1. Val Ewing, KL--I liked how JvA toned down Val's accent over time--not just deciding over a hiatus to drop it.

    2. Emma Channing, FC--As stated earlier, Margaret Ladd gave Emma a slight tremble to her voice to denote Emma's fragility, but could drop a one-liner almost as well as her sardonic mother.

    3. Sable Colby, The Colbys--SB ought to do audio books! I wonder if they named her "Sable" as a nod to Beacham's smooth, soothing delivery (at least when she wasn't barking insults at people).

    4. Blake Carrington, Dynasty--you could say prior to Blake, Forsythe was phoning it in just fine.

    5. Lilimae Clements, KL--Unlike her daughter, Lilimae never lost her accent--and thank goodness for that.

The thing that most struck me about Blake and Sable's Season Nine friendship was those two marvellous voices joining forces. My mental fanfic for a continued Dynasty would see them as business partners making a new fortune by narrating audiobooks.

    Oh, and there's also this.

Oh, my! I recall the period when that book came out, trying to read a few pages here and there while carrying it around from class to class. Other students would spot the cover and strike up conversations. Now I know I could have walked around listening to all the salacious details being told by Sable Colby without being interrupted. :ear:

    1. Sable Colby - Her voice is just everything. I could listen to her all day.
    2. Caress Morell - So campy and feline and flirty in an OTT way. Purrrrfect.
    3. Alexis Colby - So clipped and precise. Especially early Alexis from season 2 and 3 where she doesn't screech people out of her office. She's so menacing at the beginning. Like Blake said, a smiling rattle snake.
4.Channing Carter - Maybe a controversial choice but I loved her southern twang. Even if it was affected.
    5. Dominique Deveraux - Just because she's such a phoney. She's doing the most to give Joan Crawford but I still hear Millie Cox.

    2. Sue Ellen
    3 Sable
    4. Alexis
    5. Pam’s laugh

(If that last one doesn’t count I’ll go with Naldo Marchetta for always having me in stitches, aswell, for his pronunciation of Jenna and Charlotte, the only time their names became interesting)

I always liked the way Jordon Lee said Ewin’ Arl, very funny ;-)

On RTE I loved Tara Welles voice, so well spoken and beautiful :)

Oh that's fine, and it also makes me think if we should do a favourite laughter top 5 (it'd probably be a battle between Pam and Gary Ewing!)

Oh Willie I don’t think I could bear it if Gary beat Pam again. Once in a lifetime was quite once enough. But yes, a great idea - a best laugh battle would be fine indeed ;-)

    1) Sabella (Sable) Scott Colby - THE COLBYS and DYNASTY.

    2) Emma Channing Cooley Cabot St. James - FALCON CREST.

    3) John Ross Ewing II (J.R.) - DALLAS.

    4) Clayton Farlow - DALLAS.

    5) Alexis Morell Carrington Colby Dexter Rowan - DYNASTY.

Emma appears from the second storey, of the Falcon Crest mansion. Angela is on the couch in the living room, gazing into the fire and convalescing after the 'hit and run' incident, which implicates Lance, (a scene from season 4, 1984 - '85):

    Emma: "Oh mother!"

Angela: "Oh Emma! I thought you'd gone to bed long ago."

Emma: "I did but I couldn't help thinking about the upstairs hall."

Angela: "What's wrong with it? We just painted and papered up there."

Emma: "Oh no mother! There's your door and mine and then there's Julia's old room. And now the room Lance lived in since he was a little boy. Mother it's so empty now. It's so sad!"

Angela: "The most constant thing in life Emma is change."

Emma: "I know but our changes have been so chaotic."

Angela: "Especially poor Julia. As for Lance I'm glad I found out his true nature, before he inherited Falcon Crest. I know who I can trust now. You're all I have left."

Emma: "Oh mother I'll never leave you!"

Mother and daughter hug, as Angela says, "I know darling. I know!"

    1. Sable Colby - This was the first one who came to mind when I first saw the title for this battle and it seems many other members are in agreement!
    2. Adam Carrington - And this was the second. Like dark chocolate, or a full bodied red wine, this is the prefect villain voice.
    3. Sue Ellen Ewing - Especially in earlier seasons when she spoke with a stronger Texan accent.
    4. Cecil Colby - Such a wonderfully deep and distinctive voice.
    5. Miss Ellie - Warm and comforting, like her character.
