Oh I remember this theme. My parents watched this show way back in the late 1980s I think. I never did. It was called "Kliniken" in Swedish. :)

I am very touched @Willie Oleson ! You did temporarily force me to look deep within myself and cross to the dark side. I feel I've grown. :D

1 - Dynasty: this was just so lush. So regal. So majestic. Particularly when they upped the ante with the trumpets from season two onward.

2 - Flamingo Road: as others have pointed out, it was unique and it really gave a feeling of the sweaty Southern swampland that the show was set in.

3 - Bare Essence: I know that this won't appear anywhere on the top 5 but I'm throwing it in because I love the drama of it. It sounds akin to the themes of those big miniseries like Lace and North & South.

4 - Knots Landing: my favourite is the season 5 version. Particularly that middle bit (bridge?) that kicks in around Constance McCashin's title card. I liked how they kept tweaking it over the years to keep it fresh, even if some of the later versions sounded a bit generic.

5 - Falcon Crest: like Bare Essence, the arrangement on this was such high drama.

Honourable mention should also go to Paper Dolls for eschewing the standard orchestral dramatics that the other soaps used and went for a more pop theme that is probably the only theme that you could say sounds truly 80's today.

The opening credits are so much fun, Jessica Walter as the hysterical bitch-diva, and somehow I keep seeing Michael Woods putting his arm in a crocodile's mouth.

Yes! I love how we get two slaps around the face before the title card even appears.

    1) DALLAS (commencing at 3:10, from the video shown below).
    2) FALCON CREST (commencing at 58:20).
    3) DYNASTY (commencing at 8:38).
    4) THE COLBYS (commencing at 49:08).
    5) KNOTS LANDING (commencing at 19:03).

Each of the above five are featured in a video shown below, in the segments I have stipulated. There are also a lot of other shows from the seventies and eighties featured.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qzsJizG-bOY

Since the video seems to be temporarily down it is entitled: 'T.V. THEMES; "PRIME TIME"; 70's & 80's - ACTION/DRAMA/SOAP CLASSICS;-SCREEN & PROMO SHOTS', if you want to Google.

Cliff goes to the Ewing building, with proof that Digger and Jock jointly owned oil field 23. Bobby recently reopened the field. He leaves the office, before Cliff's smile is short lived, (a scene from season 2; DVD-3, 1979-'80):

J.R. picks up the phone: "Harry Owens please!"

Cliff: "I must say you're taking this quite well. You're not going to even fight me?"

J.R.: "Oh I've learned in this business you have to roll with the punches."

J.R.: "Harry, hi! J.R. Ewing here. Fine, fine. Can you give me a report on Ewing 23 please? 5000 barrels a month."

J.R. speaks to Cliff: "I figure your share should be about half a million dollars a year."

J.R. to Harry on the phone: "Harry this is what I want you to do, close down that field. That's right. Shut down every single well."

Poor Cliff doesn't know which way to turn.

And here's the thrilling soap themes countdown.

Zero points for THE YELLOW ROSE and Liz Craig's spin-off series THE STORE (a.k.a. BERRENGER'S)

3 points for EMERALD POINT N.A.S.

The military band sound definitely makes it the most descriptive intro theme. You wouldn't think this was about oil or wine.

Prime Time Soap Down Under managed to score 6 points.

The beginning is very good as it sounds both grandeur-ish and sinister, but somehow - the typical "bridge" notwithstanding - it struggles to maintain its momentum.

The rest of the short-lived prime time soaps:

    Bare Essence - 8 points (!)
    Flamingo Road - 10 points

    5. THE COLBYS - 21 points

The intro's intro sounds a little hesitant, almost as if it feels obliged to be the DYNASTY twin, but then it suddenly explodes into something else and from that point on The Colbys march to the beat of their own drum.

A theme that creates memories you never had.

To all the die-hard Knots fans who are going to be miffed that their favourite show didn't win: take solace in the fact that Knots Landing was chosen the best theme of ALL tv-series intros.

I had put my money on the DALLAS theme but, alas, Gary Ewing's Big Brother Show ranks at #3 with 44 points.
