    1. Philip Erikson - FALCON CREST - an underused character but a vital one in the early years of Falcon Crest. The seeming loyal attorney who was willing to bend the law to help Angela but often was just out to help himself. Fascinating character who could have been developed further had he not been killed off prematurely.

    2. James Westmont - KNOTS LANDING - the most interesting lawyer on the show wasn't Mack (I thought he was too shouty) but Abby's lawyer James Westmont who not only aided her in embezzling Gary's inheritance but instigated the kidnap of Val's babies.

    3. Greg Reardon - FALCON CREST - a complete contrast to Erikson in that he tried to keep Angela on the right side of the law and was always unwilling to help her break it.

    4. Scotty Demarest - DALLAS - for failing to keep Jenna out of jail initially meant he deserved a high placing in my top 5 but subsequently getting her released was unforgivable. Had he found a way of pinning the crime on Charley I would have given him the number 1 spot. :D

    5. Jake Dunham - DYNASTY - this one is a bit of a cheat because it has more to do to my admiration of Brian Dennehy as an actor than it has to do with the character he played. However, being the DA prosecuting on Blake's trial meant he introduced Dynasty viewers to Alexis which changed that show forever and for that alone he deserves to be in my top 5.

Out of interest, are we including main characters who worked in this field, or does the law have to be their raison d'être?

I think that's how we did it for the doctors and cops & sheriffs.
But not necessarily limited to courtroom/occupation-related scenes. Philip Erikson was also very much a soap character, but he wouldn't be there if he wasn't Angela's legal (*cough-cough*) adviser.

Thanks for the clarification, Willie. Now I know not to include my possible #1 choice (I hope he doesn't take it to heart):

I love your choices, but I have a question about Abby's lawyer James Westmont. I thought only Scott Easton was involved in the baby snatching. Was Westmont in on it as well?

You're right, Westmont was embezzler-in-chief and Easton arranged the kidnapping. It doesn't change my vote though, Westmont was key in helping Abby morph from bitch into superbitch.

I like @Angela Channing's list. However, one legal counsel I always wished we saw more of was Andrew Laird, Blake's lawyer, or as Fallon called him, Blake's consigliere.:)

Was Arthur Cates the spin-off answer to Andrew Laird? He knows so much about the Colby family.

    1. Harv Smithfield

    1_iphone.jpg

Loyal, moral, and often the voice of reason when things weren't going to good for the Ewings, which was often. Harv played an important role in many of Dallas' best story lines and was one of those recurring characters that added something familiar and dependable for most of the series.

    2. Andrew Laird

    dynasty-s1-18.jpg

Andrew Laird was shrewd and fiercely loyal, and was always on hand to help Blake in times of trouble. There seemed to be a genuine friendship there and a mutual admiration.

    3. Philip Eriksson

    MV5BMjA4NzQ1NDYyOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTg2MzU2MjE@._V1_.jpg

Devious, duplicitous and slippery, Philip had all the right qualities to make a great lawyer. One never quite new exactly where his loyalties lay, except that at the end of the day he was always looking out for number one.

    4. Greg Reardon

    FC04x08-076-300x225.jpg

Charming, debonair and ambitious, Greg didn't take any crap from anyone, including his employer Angela Channing. Unlike Angela's other minions, Greg didn't always roll over and do exactly what he was told.

    5. Jordan Roberts

    morgan11.jpg

Probably the most glamourous lawyer in Soapland, and certainly the only one with a split personality alter ego that was kind of a slut. She deserves a mention for that alone.

    1. Greg because Simon is handsome ;-)

    2. Harv Smithfield because he actually has integrity and does things by the book

    3. Jordan well because she’s Morgan :)

    4. Scotty because he failed to keep Jenna in jail otherwise he’d be number two. If he’d had Charlie put in jail aswell for being obnoxious, whiney and brattish, as Angela Channing said, well he’d definitely be number one :0)

    5. Alan Beam because he could’ve shot JR

    1) Harv Smithfield: The knee-high to a grasshopper Ewing attorney. He presided over a lot of Ewing business e.g. Jock's will, Bobby's will (Pam's dream), deciphering if Wes was Jock plus a few extra things here and there. Ole Harv was a good friend to J.R. and his family, as well as their legal counsel - DALLAS.

    2) Phillip Erickson: A smart man, as he thought. However not smart enough for Angela and Chao-Li, as they found out he had been working for the other side of the fence (aka back door Erickson). Tut tut! You can't do that now. Angela's philosophy would be either you're with me or against me. Most people would share the same opinion. Yet he managed a veneer of deceit for a while, even marrying the grape granny before the grim reaper struck, in the planecrash. One of the most corrupt attorneys in eighties prime time soapland - FALCON CREST.

    3) Marion Patrick MacKenzie: His alter ego won multiple Soap Opera Digest awards, for his always around 11 year stint on the Sea View Circle saga. He was right down the middle but he let you know this. Don't wake the neighbours up will you Mack and certainly sleep quietly beside Pollyanna Karen. Otherwise you're gonna do the steps - KNOTS LANDING.

    4) Greg Reardon: There was no fence hopping with Greg. Bed hopping yes but he didn't duo jobbing (client and adversary). What he was employed to do he carried it out to the letter of the law. He needed to watch the manure, in the FC study. Chao-Li could well have sent him to be cleaned up. Well a man has to have interests, outside of work - FALCON CREST.

    5) Andrew Laird: For three years he was the legal eagle for Blake. From the gruelling end of season 1 right through to a fuzzy time, Andrew was the sounding board to Mr. Carrington when needed - DYNASTY.

Angela has just returned to her mansion, after her morning walk in the vineyards. She is contrary, as usual. A delivery of fertiliser is expected. The fertiliser supplier arrives, in his pickup truck. The man farms horses and soon becomes her attorney, after Mrs. Channing gets the upper hand with him, (a scene from season 4, 1984 - '85):

    Greg: "Mrs. Channing."

Angela: "Are you the man with the fertiliser?"

Greg: "Well as a matter of fact I do have a good supply of it."

Angela continues to walk, while Greg drives beside her: "Take it around by the gardner's shed."

Greg: "Since you asked my name is Greg Reardon."

    Greg parks up his truck.

Angela: "I've heard of you. I didn't like what I heard and I certainly don't like what I see."

Scruffy Greg then takes the opportunity to talk about his experience and education.

@Willie Oleson, may I replace "Hairy Ape" Alan Beam with this gorgeous character?

Here is Chris Deegan with Jenna Wade in all their splendor...
    4 - Chris Deegan (Grant Goodeve): Dynasty Seasons 3, 4 & 8.

    1. Andrew Laird - DYNASTY
    upload_2019-10-19_15-3-19.png
Apart from the legal and courtroom storylines he was never too much involved with Dynasty's melodrama, although his comment towards Fallon that "she could never marry her father" made it impossible to ignore that what's been hinted at.
He was a no-nonsense character and would defend Blake at all costs, but there was no strong animosity towards Blake's opponents.
Never a mover & shaker, but I found him consistently watchable and he always had good chemistry with the other characters (as much as his profession allowed him to).
Maybe he's the only one who never stopped being a "season one" character.

    2. Sam Erskin - THE COLBYS
    upload_2019-10-19_15-41-27.png
There was nothing hot or glamorous about old Sam, and that made it very easy to underestimate him. He only featured in one (or two?) episode(s) but I found him more wicked and entertaining than his by-numbers-villain employer.

    3. A.D.A. John Moretti - THE COLBYS
    upload_2019-10-19_15-52-2.png
Eventhough his revenge background story felt a bit formulaic, he could target and torment the Colbys outside the typical boardroom and bedroom scenarios, and that made him a more surprising character.

    4. Chris Deegan - DYNASTY
    upload_2019-10-19_16-0-38.png
Certainly the prettiest one in this list, and he was both professionally and personally involved with one of the best storylines of season 4. It almost felt like a sequel to the Ted Dinard case, except that the "Ted Dinard" was now defending Steven in the custody battle.

    5. Arthur Cates - THE COLBYS
    upload_2019-10-19_16-18-27.png
Unlike Andrew Laird, he tried to sqeeze every drop of soapiness out of his role as the slippery family lawyer, and I think that worked for the spin-off show.
