Anyone notice how whenever Val's twins are seen with the Fishers, they just so happen to be crying... screaming... every single time... in the car with Harry? Crying... at the dinner table with Shelia? Crying... every time.

My question is... do you think this was intentional? To show disharmony, and that even the babies sensed something was not quite right... or do you think it was purely coincidental? I don't recall them crying nearly as much once Val takes over.

That's an interesting observation. I would put my money on this being intentional, a subtle way of leading the viewer to think the kids were unhappy/distressed in their situation, even perhaps a silent nod to the idea that the Fishers were not very well-equipped to be parents (thus snatching the babies from Sheila was 'doing the kids a favor'). They probably did not want to make it obvious--like maybe a scene where Harry snaps and yells at the kids for crying all the time, or Sheila breaking down and crying in frustration over being overwhelmed--but the discord in the Fisher home (babies crying 'for their mother') somewhat mirrored Val's feeling that the babies were alive and she needed to find them.

If the twins were even a little bit older (like toddler age), I could see that point being underlined. It makes you wonder what Lucy's first few years at Southfork were like.

I think it was intentional too, a subtle way to point out that the situation was wrong and needed correcting. Val kept saying she knew her babies were alive, she could feel it and then seeing them alive. Crying, as if crying out for their mother... well yea. It was surely intentional.

Definitely intentional. They would have done some retakes if it wasn’t.

I wonder how they got the kids to cry. Did Joan Van Ark pinch them before the cameras rolled?

The twins' request for trailers that were bigger than Michele's and Joan's was vetoed...by Michele and Joan.

Or maybe Val threatened to make them a pot of her famous coffee. :yikey:

Yes, I'm wondering about that, too... Is that fair to the actual babies?

Hmm, maybe they threatened to bring back Diana to babysit them, and they just weren't having any of that! lol

I'm sure it would not be hard to get footage of babies crying without any overt prompting.

I think there would be an outcry today if they made babies cry for the camera.

I'm guessing they were hungry or the could see their mum.

    Poor things :)

Keep in mind that the babies may not even be present in every scene. They can film a scene where camera angles hide the fact that actors are actually interacting with dolls. The (recorded) screaming and crying can be edited into the scene later on, and a few actual shots of the babies could be dropped in at key points to make it more realistic. Even with the babies on set, they could sweeten the audio in scenes where they needed loud crying and the babies were not in a crying mood.

It really bothers me when I realize that 'the babies' (born onscreen in November of 1984) would now be almost 35 years old.:eek:

Wow, I am about a year older than Val's twins, and my brother is almost exactly the same age as them.

Very interesting point of view!! I think it was intentional. Sheila Fisher also said the babies were ill and Harry went to get some medicine.

I also wonder what kind of names the Fisher´s gave them?

Since we're being amateur psychotherapists, I'll suggest that the show also purposely did not reference the names Harry and Sheila gave the twins. By having them only refer to them as "the babies," it put distance between the Fishers and the babies, at least in the viewers' minds. It's obvious they had given them actual names--there were fake birth certificates and everything--but if the show had shown Sheila calling them Harry Jr. or Shelly (they never did--I'm just making an example), it would have made the situation a bit more uncomfortable. The viewer would be reminded that the Fishers had indeed bonded with those babies who had identities as Fishers (even temporarily). The glossing-over of those identities ("those awful names the Fishers gave them," I believe was Lilimae's off-the-cuff line after Val got them back) helps the viewer not get bogged down in feeling bad for Harry and especially Sheila.

And on a lighter note, just what kind of "awful names" could the Fishers give those kids? Petey & Lola? Nigel & Bertha? Vladimir & Gertrude?

Given that Lilimae wanted Val to name her son "Wiley" (Lilimae's maiden name), perhaps Lilimae didn't have the best grasp of the subject.

I can only imagine the Fishers would have given them wacky, 1980s 'fad' names. The irony is that most of the fad names of the period came from soap operas.
