    testing, testing...

Would anyone be interested in discussing various number 1 hits, and maybe rate them in order to get an average score?
Who's gonna love it and who's gonna hate it, interpretations and memories associated with a certain #1 hit, did you buy this single (and thus supporting its rank in the charts) or did you buy the album based on the chart hit (and how was that?).
Compared to the other chart hits of that time (say, the top 5 or top 10) do you think it deserved to be the #1 hit?

And does the thread prefix make sense?

I think it sounds like a fun idea Willie.

The prefix makes sense as far as I'm concerned, but if you want a different prefix, let me know and I can make you one.

I think freakytrigger is going to be an interesting reference, especially afterwards.

We're doing so many "choose your favourite" threads, I thought it would be nice to let someone pick a #1 hit and just deal with it.
But I'm considering all official singles charts, just in case an American or Australian forum member wants to join in (and I hope they do).

It's not a game, there's nothing to win (maybe I shouldn't mention that part) and it doesn't matter if you love it or hate it, as long as you rate it.

About the rating system... will it be 1-10? Cause I hate those 1-5 ratings where I end up rating everything a 3 or a 4.

Yes, we're rating music, not restaurants:)

This is just a thought, it's open to discussion. We could also use one specific chart.
Please let me know what you prefer.

I like the idea of it being open to various charts. Why not? It increases the pool of songs to choose from and one chart isn't any more valid than another. We're an international site so why not make the Spotlight On Number 1 Hits international too?

This is what I would prefer too, as you say, we're an international site.

I know so much about our UK charts and what's been there, so for me, it will be a really fascinating look at songs that were number one in various countries outside the UK.

I would happily go along with any decision you made Willie. I think it's going to be a fun undertaking no matter what parameters you set and I trust your instincts.

It entered the Dutch Top 40 on August 5, 1989 at #11, became #1 on August 12 and retained that position for 4 weeks.

The SHAKA ZULU soundtrack album was released in 1987 so it's possible that the song gained popularity because of the mini-series video released in 1989, and maybe it was rerun on television too.
Another TV related oddity that appeared in those particular charts was "Reflections" by Diana Ross & The Supremes, which was the intro theme from the TV series CHINA BEACH.
And also the movie soundtrack songs "Licence To Kill" (Gladys Knight) and "Batdance" (Prince), plus Don Johnson's single "Tell It Like It Is", and also a cover version of Ravel's "Bolero", a song that was used in the film "10" although this release had nothing to do with that.
All in all, a very Hollywood-heavy chart.

I've not heard of the song nor the TV series before so this has been my first time listening to it. The song sounds like a mix of traditional African music and 1980s discos and it's a fusion that kind of works.

Margaret Singana brings a great energy to the song and elevates it to something more memorable than the song would otherwise be. It's a good choice of song for a TV series as it gives a good indication of what the show is about which seems to be a male character proving himself to be a leader amongst group of other people (not seen it so I might be totally wrong). The song does evoke a sense of power, freedom and greatness and has a strong positive message. It makes me curious to see what the series is actually about.

I'm not sure I would buy the record (I know no one buys records any more) or download it but would enjoy listening to it if I heard it on the radio. Looking at the date the song made number 1, other songs that made it to the top that year (in the UK at least) included Madonna's Like A Prayer which I think is one of the greatest singles of all time and We Are Growing doesn't come anywhere close to being as good. That said, it is still great music and has an epic quality about it and would sound great through headphones with the volume turned up loud. I don't know if this track was ever released as a single in the UK and it if was I don't think it did very well which is a shame as it would have been a great song to expose more of the UK record buying public to African music.

I like it a lot but I can't say I really love it so out of 10 I'd give it a...

It was my first time hearing this song and on first listen I didn’t know what to expect, so this took me by surprise. I instantly liked this tune and it’s also very catchy so I can see why it became a Number one.

I did check out if the song had been released in the UK and couldn’t find any evidence to say it had which is a shame, it would’ve been interesting to see how successful it could have been here too.

I’ve listened to it a few more times and the music is full of energy, rhythm and power, it makes me want to get moving. Margaret Singana had a great voice, she was one of those naturally gifted singers who makes singing appear easy, I enjoyed hearing her strong and inspiring vocals.

This was a great choice to start us off Willie and even though I like this song it’s unlikely I would buy it, although I would turn the volume up if I heard it elsewhere – hope I’m making sense here. :D
