I'm really struggling with this one. I bought two BWO albums and loving all the tracks, I don't think I will have much time for AOL. :(

    Donna Summer

    Top 15

Summer earned a total of 32 hit singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in her lifetime, with 14 of those reaching the top ten. She claimed a top 40 hit every year between 1975 and 1984, and from her first top ten hit in 1976, to the end of 1982, she had 12 top ten hits; (10 were top five hits) more than any other act. She returned to the Hot 100's top five in 1983, and claimed her final top ten hit in 1989 with "This Time I Know It's for Real". Her most recent Hot 100 hit came in 1999 with "I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiro)". While her fortunes on the Hot 100 waned through those decades, Summer remained a force on the U.S. Dance/Club Play Songs chart over her entire career.

Summer died on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, Florida. In her obituary in The Times, she was described as the "undisputed queen of the Seventies disco boom" who reached the status of "one of the world's leading female singers." Giorgio Moroder described Summer's work with him on the song "I Feel Love" as "really the start of electronic dance" music. In 2013, Summer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In December 2016, Billboard Magazine ranked her as the 6th most successful dance artist of all-time

I decided to go in a different direction to the Queen Of Disco stuff this time round. Here's a Top Fifteen of Donna's more thoughtful songs:

    1. Any Way At All
    For the soaring spirituality.

    2. Forgive Me
    For the sweetness.

    3. Friends Unknown
For the sentiment (and a knockout vocal).

    4.Pandora's Box
    For the anger and bitterness.

    5. Sometimes Like Butterflies
    For the freedom.

    6. Full Of Emptiness
    For the country vibe.

    7. Theme from The Deep (Down Deep Inside) - A Love Song
    For reinvigorating a familiar song.

    8. Whispering Waves
For the imagery (and the beautifully fragile vocal)

    9. Dance Into My Life
    For the fairytale.

    10. Can't We Just Sit Down (And Talk It Over)
    For the emotion.

    11. Something's In The Wind
    For the prediction.

    12. Winter Melody
    For the ambience.

    13. A Whole New World (with Dave Koz)
    For the class.

    14. Sand On My Feet
    For the warmth.

    15. Don't Cry For Me Argentina
    For the drama.

    And some more Summer slowies:

    Take Heart

Does He Love You (with Liza Minnelli)

    I'm A Rainbow

    On My Honor

    All Through The Night

    The Power Of One

Choosing some tracks for this round has got me to drag a heap of DS songs back into my Favourites playlist. I've found myself exploring interviews, videos and bios.

This is a nice 2008 interview which includes a lot of Donna's history.

After listening to her greatest hits this week, my top two songs remain the same as ever, but a great surprise is my number three. I don't think I've ever listed it in a top ten of Summer songs before and this week I found myself totally falling in love with it.

    1. Love Is in Control (Finger on the Trigger)
    2. State of Independence
    3. I Don't Wanna Get Hurt
    4. Love to Love You Baby
    5. Love's Unkind

Isn't it great when that happens?

I loved IDWGH when it first came out, and then fell out of love with it. I think my issue is that the beginning feels clipped - like the song is already underway when it starts.

Then when the box set of her 80s/90s albums came out I was reminded of the 7" Remix with those introductory beats and suddenly everything fell back into place (I also adore the bit with all the electronic "hurt"s at about 2 minutes):

As no-one's mentioned it yet, here's my favourite of her SAW-era songs, which I've been listening to a great deal recently:
