Rip Torn, the US actor best known for his roles in Men in Black and The Larry Sanders Show, has died aged 88.

A character actor with a seven-decade career, he won an Emmy in 1996 for playing Artie, Sanders' irascible producer, in Garry Shandling's sitcom.

His sole Oscar nomination came for 1983 drama Cross Creek.

Will Smith, who appeared with Torn in Men in Black and its first sequel, paid tribute by posting a picture of them together on Instagram.

I've probably seen him in oodles of things, but my first association with him is as Lionel Banks, a slightly sordid suitor of Karen's in Will & Grace.

Rip Torn is such a cool name. It's like the edgy cousin of Red Buttons.

I just this minute read this:

Born in Texas in 1931, the son of an agricultural economist, Torn’s given names were Elmore Rual, with “Rip” being a traditional nickname within his family. (His mother’s maiden name was Spacek; his cousin is Carrie star Sissy Spacek.)

Totally agree. It was through the brilliant The Larry Sanders Show that I first became aware of Rip Torn. Artie was one of the best characters in one of the best US sitcoms of the 1990s.

Torn was known, however, to use capital letters and proper punctuation. Which made him very easy to work with.

Great tribute to Torn's performance as Artie here:

    https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-...ip-torn-lit-up-tv-with-the-larry-sanders-show

"Artie is at once the most selfish and selfless character in the entire series."
