That only covers the season until mid-April and the actual tv season runs into May.

There is only one "official" Nielsen season 1987/88 and it ended on April 17th, 1988.

It does today, but it didn't in the 1980s. Even though the networks continued to air originals into May (under the May Sweeps moniker), the Nielsen ratings service would end the official television season in mid April and issue the year-end chart at that point.

In fact, it wasn't till the mid 1990s that Nielsen and the networks finally agreed to extend the original official 30-week TV season to also include the May Sweeps. In this May 1996 article from The Hollywood Reporter, the author discusses Nielsen and the networks struggling to select the new season-ending date.

But that list also shows a share of 14.3 for Dynasty, although it's on rank 41 there. Strange.

And i didn't even know that there was a show called "Sable". :D

    It is really strange ...
on one list there is "Aaron´s Way" on the other not ...
on one list "LA Law" and "Moonlighting" share the same rank like on the other list but there´s no number 13 to follow

Was Dynasty number 41 or 33?

If you look at the bottom of the chart you posted above you will see the disclaimer "6 episodes or more".

So, whoever compiled that chart, for whatever magazine it came from, decided to omit shows which aired only a handful of episodes prior to the official conclusion of the season. They also omitted movie nights, such as "CBS Sunday Night Movie".

Even so, they made mistakes. For example, mid-season replacement series "In the Heat of the Night" which launched in early March had aired 7 episodes (or 6 if you count the double-episode pilot as one) by April 12th, 1988 and therefore should've been included in this condensed chart (it tied for the 19th/20th spot in the full chart) , but is nowhere to be seen.

For this reason, I'd go with the full chart from the Associated Press where DYNASTY is ranked 41st for the season. Here is an AP article from April 21st, 1988 crowning NBC the winner of the 1987/1988 season where you can see the full chart along with additional top-10 charts for TV movies and mini-series, respectively.

Thank you very much! "My Two Dads" show in mentioned in the text of the article as one of new shows in TOP 30, but it still stated twice at the end (as No. 21 and No. 32). I can understand that this show changed time slot during a season, but I does not seem logical to be twice in the chart.

    - Thanks a lot but it´s still strange that Dynasty & Falcon Crest share a rank on this list but on the 2 others Dynasty is one rank higher then Falcon Crest

Nah, "Dynasty" is alone on 41 with a 14.3 share. Then follows rank 42 and THERE is a tie between "Falcon Crest" and "Day by Day". ;)

By the way, I also found a year-ending chart for the 1987/1988 season (written by a different author, but published at the same time in April 1988), where DYNASTY was ranked 37th for the season. That chart also omitted the movie nights, but included the short-lived series.

And that underscores what I keep saying. Rankings are unreliable and misleading. Was DYNASTY 33rd, 37th or 41st? It depends on what you decide to compare it to. Did the show enter the top-20 any given week or not? It depends what higher rated shows were preempted that week and missing from the chart.

The only definitive way of looking at the ratings is to look at the actual ratings. All charts agree the show averaged a 14.3 rating (and a 25 share) that season. One rating point represented 886,000 households during the 1987/1988 season (that number was increasing every year).

So, the show pulled in an average of 12.67 million households that year, which was about half of what it had been able to score in the fall of 1985, just a year and a half before.

It's either an error no one caught at the time or its has something to do with the 2 March airings out of its regular timeslot. What's interesting is that the show later did get double weekly airings of all-new episodes (Sundays and Wednesdays), but that didn't happen till the fall of 1989.

Yes, and one list had Season 1 as high as 28th place.

And - joking aside - isn’t that incredible. The #1 drama on TV today (in terms of total viewership) is NCIS with about 12 mil viewers, while the real #1 (in the 18-49 demo) is This is Us, which gets 8 mil viewers.

Season 8 of Dynasty must have been over 18 mil (we’ll never know exactly as they only began using people meters in 1987 and all ratings reports were still citing household figures).

I'd always chose nuDynasty over an episode of that boring NCIS crap!
