There is a wonderful feature in today's Belfast News Letter looking back at many of the classic TV shows of the 80s.

The article was inspired by the news of Spitting Image making a comeback.

I must admit the journalist who wrote the article has great taste, amongst the shows she looks back at are Bullseye, Blankety Blank and 3-2-1.

And of course, the likes of Cagney and Lacey and Hart to Hart get a mention.

Don't worry, she didn't forget Dallas or Dynasty (describing "twitchy Sue Ellen with her drinking problem").

The great comedies of the era get mentioned (Are You Being Served?, Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses, 'Allo 'Allo) as do other strong shows such as Dempsey and Makepeace and The Fall Guy.

    Lovely nostalgic stuff.

The sad thing about it - especially regarding the comedies - is that so many of the great comedies would never get made today for fear of offending somebody.

All the more reason we cherish and honour the greatness of those iconic shows.
