Just stopping by before the weekend to wish everyone a Happy St Patrick's Day.

It's falling on a Sunday, which may prove problematic here in Northern Ireland as everywhere bloody closes at 6pm (thanks DUP!)

But those who are prepared will be well stocked up ;)

Have a great one if you are celebrating!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all. Being Irish is an all-year thing for some of us....but today, others wish they were as lucky as we are!

My hometown of Savannah, Georgia, throws one of the biggest parades in the world, but I have no wishes to be there...it's turned into Mardi Gras lite. At least they had the decency to have the parade on Saturday so as not to compete with attending Church on Sunday. But I'll bet 75% of the Church attendees were hung over and felt like death warmed-over as they sat in the pews. As well they should! :mo:

An American tradition, greater than any tradition of any nation, is paying lip service to some group and fake honouring them. In New York easily more than a million people (perhaps way more) will get all drunk on St. Patrick's Day and be "Irish for the day." All the while, hardly anyone will have either visited this or know what it is about. (And hence the reason the US has so many Irish descendants).

Yes, it does grind my gears somewhat, how easily they trot out the usual Irish stereotypes for a few days. I was in a grocery store and they were sampling Irish soda bread and some kind of pastries with Irish-produced butter. There was Guinness on display and Corned Beef and cabbage...all the usual suspects. I wondered if they just assumed all Irish people are lazy alcoholics who spend their days growing potatoes and playing with leprechauns while wearing garish, green plaid suits. If they'd "honored" other ethnic groups with stereotypical foods and costume wardrobe pieces this way, the PC Police would have come down on them like a ton of bricks (I'm sure you can think of a few). I know some people (kids, especially) don't know any better, but these were adults. I'm the last person to join the Cult of the Perpetually Offended and throw around the 'cultural appropriation' card, but I'm surprised some of those people haven't jumped up and complained, since there are so few things left to feign "offense" over. "Oh, it's just good fun..." someone would say. I'm sure people said the same thing in the 1950s when they did minstrel shows in blackface.

As I mentioned above, I have avoided the parade and events in Savannah for decades as the celebration takes on the circus atmosphere of Mardi Gras (i.e. an excuse to get sloppy drunk), and where I now live there isn't that much to St. Pat's. Part of that avoidance was because the wrong things are being chosen for emphasis.

And contrary to popular belief, we are not always drunk - I hate that stereotype. Nor are we all 4 foot high with ginger beards ;) The assumptions you mention @Daniel Avery do really bother me yes. Although if life was actually like that here, we'd probably all be a lot more chilled and happier to a certain extent. You're absolutely right in what you say and it cracks me up that other nations have bigger parades and celebrations than we actually do have in Ireland itself.

I recall back in the 1990s, the Prime Minister of Ireland actually came to Savannah for the parade/celebration! Then again, maybe the PM was not popular with the people of Ireland so he decided to chill out in a place where he'd be treated like a rock star for a few days.
