ITV Granada have announced that Toyah Battersby is to return to Coronation Street.

“I am thrilled to be re-joining my old friends on the cobbles and hugely excited to be given the opportunity to explore the character of Toyah 13 years on. Coronation Street has always had a place in my heart and I’m delighted to be working again with my good friend Jane Danson and bringing the Battersby sisters back together. The script writers and producers have come up with some fantastic, clever, and detailed story-lines that have inspired me and I feel excited to get started!” – Georgia Taylor

Georgia Taylor, who played the character from 1997 to 2003, will return to the role of Toyah next month and will appear on screen in episodes screened from December onwards. Christmas is a time for families and Leanne Battersby is heading for a festive family reunion with her half-sister Toyah, ITV Granada has teased.

With Leanne pregnant with Steve McDonald’s baby the sisters have a lot of catching up to do, but viewers will have to wait and see what exactly brings ‘Our Toyah’ back to Weatherfield. Toyah was last seen on the cobbles 13 years ago in February 2003. She left Weatherfield after finding out her college lecturer boyfriend had got her friend Maria pregnant.

She has been mentioned regularly by Leanne who has visited her sister a few times. Viewers will get to see how Toyah has changed in the past 13 years while scripts will possibly delve into unfinished business with some of the locals and of course the question of what baggage will she bring with her to Weatherfield and is she here to stay? Bosses at the Salford Quays studios where the programme is produced note all will be revealed at Christmas.

“I am delighted that Georgia Taylor has agreed to return to the role of Toyah. She is a talented actress who has had great success since leaving the show in 2003. Family relationships are the lifeblood of soap operas and I am excited to explore the drama that Toyah will bring with her to the cobbles. She has led an interesting life away from Weatherfield and she has secrets she has kept even from Leanne. Her arrival this Christmas looks set to put the cat amongst the Coronation Street pigeons.” – Producer Kate Oates

Yuck :( I think she is a terrible actress. Everything I have seen her in she is just miserable looking.

Not a fan of the character although I've always considered Georgia a fairly decent actress.

But this announcement does not exactly set me alight with excitement.

Also, her return can only mean even more airtime for Leanne who is already shoe horned into almost every episode as it is.

How about more stories for some of the existing stalwart characters such as Rita and Norris who are rarely seen on screen these days, rather than resurrecting old faces.

I'm happy to see the continuity of Leanne's story and would much prefer to see a return of a character that still has family in the show. We know Leanne has always been in touch with Toyah, so it feels natural that she would appear again.

So many characters have left without a mention and one of the great things about Corrie is its history. For me this is a great move and I'm looking forward to seeing where this takes Toyah, who will she interact with out of all the newbies.

Phil Simmonds befriends Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) after landlord Duggie Ferguson (John Bowe) makes him homeless in September 2000. He takes legal action against Duggie but later settles out of court. He reappears on 9 April 2001, when Toyah encounters him on the street. Four days later, Phil brutally rapes Toyah in the ginnel. Toyah is left clueless as to the identity of her attacker as Phil pretends to support her through her ordeal. On 30 April 2001, when Toyah is on her own in her house with Phil she suddenly recognises his voice as being that of the rapist. Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) hears her screams from the street, breaks into the house and saves her from Phil.

In August 2001, Toyah visits Phil in prison, after he sends her a letter pleading for her forgiveness. She is shocked to see that he has attempted suicide. She gets Phil to agree to plead guilty to the rape charges. However, Toyah later discovers that Phil has no intention of pleading guilty, despite the DNA evidence. He later changes his plea to guilty, meaning that no trial would take place, much to Toyah's relief. On 7 September 2001, Phil is sentenced to ten years imprisonment for Toyah's rape.

I wonder how Eva will react to Leanne's sister returning...? Could it spark a new friendship or one full of bitter and jealousy?
