Concerning, but not limited to, the Big Four, in particular, what plots did you enjoy most? Where there some that you had you like: "Wow! This is really good!"

    What are they?

The first one that came to mind is Jock's will and the ensuing fight for Ewing Oil. Dallas at it's best.

That was indeed a good one; one of the Ewing family's juicier stories.

I could wax nostalgic about several daytime plots....and likely bore everyone to tears. :D

But for the Big Four Nighttime soaps, I liked KL's Karen MacKenzie's kidnapping plot in season eight; I thought the twist of Empire Valley being a toxic waste dump was brilliant, too. I remember loving FC's romantic plotline between Emma and Dwayne, and the Who killed Carlo Agretti plotline.

The season long "Val's Babies" plot in season 6 of Knots Landing. It was such a great story that incorporated nearly every character on the show.

The "Who Killed Travis?" plot in the first season of Savannah.

Sable's escalating attempts to unseat Jeff in season one The Colbys and undo the gift that Connie gave him. Her machinations just grew and grew until the whole thing blew up in her face in spectacular fashion at the trial.

Dynasty season 9's nazi treasure, JR's masterpiece, Karen's pill addiction, the Cord/Howard/Peyton/Jacks/Harrington/Webber/Van Leyden storyline, the Colby/Cassidy storyline, the first season of Desperate Housewives was awesome too.

Some of these I would agree with:

I liked Karen's pill addiction arc, especially all the "don't treat me like some junkie" dialogue. It was good.

For me, however, my favorite story line from the Big Four would be when Valene's twins were kidnapped. Now, that in itself might sound generic, but it was the aftermath that intrigued me the most. Valene's subsequent slip into depression caused her to retreat into another woman; by name, Verna Ellers. The scene where she "remakes" herself in front of the hotel bathroom mirror is priceless. Superb. TV at its finest, or at least from my view.

Val's babies is likely my favourite soap plot ever. I also love Dynasty's season 9 who killed Roger Grimes plot, and the Jock the imposter stuff from Dallas. Also the Wolfbridge stuff from Knots Landing was just so weirdly creepy.

Season Nine of Dynasty was good. I did like their reaching back to the beginning to tie-in the last season.

Kimberly Dies, Comes Back From The Dead And Becomes The Resident Nut is a favourite one of mine.

Whenever I run into a problem in real life I ask myself "What Would Kimberly Shaw Do?" and as you can tell, my life is amazing because of it.

Nothing really tops the lead in to JR being shot. Such great television.

    Stephanie Harper's quest for revenge.

Faster paced, Marlena Evans possession would have been much better and quite excellent.

100% agreement. It was like a prelude to the real life Koch brothers fight except one on one instead of 2 on 2.

Best year of a television series. Ever. It's a shame Jim Davis died so young as Jock was such an integral character. Without Jock Ewing and him founding Ewing Oil, there is no Dallas. I loved the way they handled his death though. They kept his memory alive all the way to the end of the series, almost 10 years after he died, and the contest for Ewing Oil which Jock created in his will was the best Dallas ever got.

I'll add the events leading up to JR getting shot at the end of season 3 which made Dallas a phenomenon. After JR got shot and the mystery of who did it, Dallas was riding a tidal wave of popularity no TV series had ever, or will ever match.

I've never seen any other 1980s soaps so I can't comment on those. In the 80s I only had time to watch one TV show weekly and I chose Dallas.

Since then, the closest things I've seen to what you might call a primetime soap, although I just call them primetime dramas, are Friday Night Lights, One Tree Hill, and Nashville. Even Dallas was basically a modern Western. It makes sense it would do extremely well since the most watched TV series with the greatest longevity before Dallas was Gunsmoke. Dallas, whatever name they had given it, could not have been set anywhere but in Texas.

It was episodic TV with mostly self-contained stories told in an hour or at most two episodes when it began. People started calling Dallas a soap when they changed the format from stories told within an episode to stories that continued from week to week but it was still a Western - the saga of a Texas family in the oil and ranching businesses. By now most primetime shows have followed Dallas' lead and chosen to use that format as well.

A few of my favourite soap storylines are:

    Who shot JR? - Dallas
Who shot Carlo Argetti? - Falcon Crest
    Wes Pamalee - Dallas
Benny goes on the run after being wrongly accused of killing Linda Welch - Crossroads
    Val's babies - Knots Landing
The Jordache domestic abuse and the subsequent burying of the body under the patio - Brookside
Iris Scott falsely accusing Arthur Brownlow of sexual molestation - Crossroads
    Ashley's dementia - Emmerdale
    Shirley's cancer - A Country Practice
Lute Mae is Constance's mother - Flamingo Road

I think FC's "Who shot Carlo Argetti?" was a good one, although the resolution ( Jacqueline Perrault dying) was Julia also shooting the soap in the foot.

Dynasty's Alexis' return arc, from moving into the studio, causing Krystle's miscarriage, orchestrating a seductive getaway with Blake, driving a wedge between him and Krystle with Nick, and then when all fails marrying Cecil to become someone Blake cannot exile again was amazing. I wish Cecil had not died though.

I also liked the revelation on The Colbys that Philip Colby was alive, and the way Frankie's attraction to him even though (or because) he was such a cad confirmed Sable's prediction about her betraying him to Jason.

I think Dallas' use of Jock's death with the will was a great way of making lemonade with lemons (the actors' real life death), but I am more partial to the discovery that Rebecca is alive because she and her family (and company) were such a game changer earlier in the show.

Val's twins is, I concur with posters here, a classic, including the not-quite-direct guilt of Abby.

You should do what Hillary Michaels from Models Inc would do.

Or even better - What would Carrie from Models Inc do?
