In season five we saw J.R. and Sue Ellen reconcile which led to them remarrying in season 6. Do you think she should have remarried J.R.? I like the way the story went but it's interesting to think about what have happened if they didn't remarry.

Imagine what could have happened if Sue Ellen had married Cliff instead. I'm not saying that would have necessarily made the show better or worse but it could have led to some very interesting storylines where J.R. does everything he can to break up their marriage. It would have taken the Barnes-Ewing feud to another level. Especially if Sue Ellen had custody of John Ross when she married Cliff. Seeing JR's reaction to Cliff becoming John Ross' stepfather would have been priceless!

I think Sue Ellen's life would have turned from bad to worse had she married Cliff. He did not care about her AT ALL, she was no more than a means to an end - and that end was to pass J.R. off any way possible. (Not to say she didn't use Cliff for the same reason, because she definitely did.)

If Sue Ellen didn't reconcile with J.R. in season 5, I would have been more interested to see her marry Clayton and have that dynamic play out than her revert to a relationship with Cliff. Clayton was a far better match for J.R., which would have created more drama, and he certainly cared for Sue Ellen; but there would have been some definite insecurity about the age difference between them and J.R. would have played that as much as possible.:p

I would have had her marry Jeremy with the agreement that this is business - you protect me and help you get at Ewing Oil and JR. Sue Ellen walks into the Wendell Mansion and learns the oil business without a prenup. The fight would be on.

Sue Ellen remarrying JR was good for the show, and bad (of course) for Sue Ellen. But it was true to her character. She was bored being divorced from him --- such that the show actually had a scene where her maid refused to play backgammon with her to illustrate that Sue Ellen literally couldn't play by herself.

If she'd married Cliff, she would have gotten bored with him like she did with every other man who treated her well --- if Cliff treated her well. If he treated her badly, she would play the victim, but he would never have treated her badly with the panache that JR did.

At that point in her development, Sue Ellen's masochistic fixation on JR couldn't be surpassed.

JR was what she wanted. And JR is what she deserved. And not in a good way. Which was kind of the point of their relationship.

As the reason to wallow in her own narcissistic self- loathing (it’s not as oxymoronic as it sounds) JR was the gift that kept on giving. Of course she kept going back.

Remarrying JR was foolish. The first time they married she did not know what type of husband he would be but here, she knows better.

She was a drama queen and we loved that! But a woman like that in real life would have been a completely stupid airhead bimbo (no offense to Liz & Dick, who were Gods in their own tragedy!).

    Who are they?

I think she went back and then stayed as long as she did because at that time she didn't know how to get by on her own. She wanted the prestige of being someone with a high social status but wouldn't have known how to earn that position. She needed someone, or better yet, a whole family whom she could leech off so she could live the way she thought she deserved. After finally making some money for herself and getting the accolades that went with it, she didn't stay much longer.

The way that Sue Ellen completely turned on Cliff when he asked her for a loan, in my eyes confirmed what Cliff once said to her "You're a user, Sue Ellen". She was all set to go with Cliff instead of J.R. when Cliff had apparently struck oceans of oil under the Wellington property.

Cliff treated Mandy a lot better than he treated Afton (and he loved Afton more than Mandy), yet he didn't treat Mandy perfect as he still saw no problem with being obsessed with Jamie and Ewing Oil while he was with Mandy, so much so that Mandy suggested that Cliff marry Jamie to control two thirds of Ewing Oil. Cliff wouldn't put up Sue Ellen's self-pity with his own politeness for long, once her being J.R.'s long suffering wife has gone. Cliff is vicious in a different way to J.R. when he is angry. Cliff is like J.R. in that he might be obsessed with something else and neglecting the woman he's with, but unlike J.R. he will shout louder and be more in-her-face with the anger when she objects, while J.R.'s anger is more subtle but has a way of hurting you much more on the emotional side and was particularly bad for Sue Ellen's morale. Sue Ellen would probably enjoy arguing with Cliff, even the very loud shouting and throwing things around the room, without her morale being damaged too much.

Of course Sue Ellen should have remarried JR. I mean she loved him and since his dad had died she had reason to believe that it had changed him. Besides he was paying more attention to her than he had in years when he was courting her with the flowers and gifts. He was also being a good father to John Ross so I can see why Sue Ellen were drawn back to him. She really wanted to believe he had changed. Of course by the time they got divorced the second time she knew better. A leopard never loses its spots. JR will never change for anybody. Not even for her.

You know it is not necessarily foolish to remarry the same person. I know of a couple who divorced and got remarried and who are still married today. So it is possible to realize that the divorce was the mistake and that they can work out their problem and are better together than apart. It has happened in real life too.

    Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton!

The yellow press dubbed them "Liz & Dick" a term they didn't like. Anyway they were probably the most famous celebrity couple who were married and divorced and remarried and divorced. I honestly believe that if he hadn't died prematurely they most likely would have remarried a third time!

And then there's Stan Laurel's love life in the late 1930s, which was like a Laurel and Hardy script by that point. He had left his wife Ruth after confessing that he wasn't over his ex-wife Lois, but Lois decided not to take him back. At that time, he also had an older ex back from Australia who successfully sued him for palimony, and a golddigging Russian who he married. While on his honeymoon, Ruth accused him of bigamy (he married a few days after the divorce as it turned out), while Stan was soon at such odds with his new wife that he wanted to kill her and bury her! He then went back to his ex-wife Ruth, and married her again once he got his divorce.

Truly comical. Not even Knots Landing and Dallas gets near this soap opera.

Sue Ellen remarrying a man who subjected her to constant mental, verbal and emotional abuse? A man who was a serial adulterer, who conspired to make her start drinking again and she still married him again?

In terms of creating drama on Dallas it was great but as a realistic decision it was completely daft. She should have married Gerry Kenderson and had a happy, sober and sane life which she was never going to have with an abusive man like JR.
