Just a collection of some of the promos that the networks churned out to sell their nighttime sagas. The first three that I picked are all from short-lived soaps but they're three of my favourite ads.

I really liked how Bare Essence and Paper Dolls used pop music in their promos rather than the generic opening themes like they did with Dallas and Dynasty promos. The promo for Central Park West is so slick, just like the show itself. It's just a shame it was on the wrong network.

Here's a collection for those of you that are watching Peyton Place.

Soothe your ears with the dulcet tones of Joan and Kimberly as they try their best to elevate Pacific Palisades above the steaming pile of cr*p that it was.

But it's exactly this kind of performance - self-aware, witty pseudo-camp - that kills the drama.

I've seen them do it for other primetime shows (The Colbys being one) but it always feels very "daytime" to me.

    Isn't it?

That sting at the end of each monologue is great. I've decided it's going to be my dramatic exit music this week.

I always thought The Colbys borrowed a whole lot from Peyton Place. It seemed that the creators must have been fans, there were just too many similarities. Even down to the strange end credits with close ups of the smiling cast.

Here's the promos I was on about.

As I said, they remind me of a daytime promo (Capitol were doing something like this around the same time) but at least they're distinctive from the Dynasty ones. I don't recall ever seeing a Dynasty promo that wasn't just clips from an episode?

From the same decade as Peyton Place, albeit on a slightly swankier budget.

"The Survivors" should be released on dvd with the subtitle: "Jump into the darkest years of Lana Turner´s Jacqueline Perrault (if "Falcon Crest" itself were already released completely and as popular as "Dallas", of course)".

I read on a DVD forum somewhere that the original episodes still exist and are held in some library / museum archive in L.A. I suppose had it garnered some sort of cult appeal in the years after it's original release, we'd have seen it on DVD already but from what I've read, it was a pretty boring series. Nice to look at, given it's European locations, but really, really slow.

There is an article somewhere that covers the tempestuous making of the show. Lana is interviewed and comes across as a complete pain in the backside to deal with. She boasts about how she refused to step down to TV production standards and still insisted on her film star rider. If I remember correctly, she actually sounded quite proud of the fact that she demanded and got a limo on standby to ferry her to the bathroom, something that Jane Wyman took umbrage with when Lana demanded the same treatment during her stint on Falcon Crest.

Here's a pretty inventive promo for Melrose Place from Australian TV. For those of you who haven't watched some of the later seasons, it contains some mild relationship spoilers. But if you're a fan of Melrose, it won't come as much of a shock that eventually everyone sleeps with everyone.

I can deal with slow, I just want to see Lana Turner and George Hamilton swan around Monte Carlo in fabulous 1960s clothes and be rich.
