Does anyone know what the cast thought of season 9. At the time were they aware of the improvements?

Nowadays have any of them spoken about it?

Apparently, John Forsythe didn't like it so much.

Neither did Gordon Thomson or Joan Collins.

Linda and Heather liked it. Joan told Oprah that the new producers were writing the show with a much greater sense of fun --- but Collins changed her tune once Alexis was cut back to only 13 episodes out of 22.

JJ didn't like it. Gordon didn't like it. Beacham didn't want to come back. Forsythe's issue may have had something to do with Linda being gone.

Since the actors had been acutely aware of the show's steep narrative slide during the years prior to Season 9, it's interesting that not more of them appreciated the improvements once they arrived... Someone suggested that Joan may have been whispering evil into the cast's ears.

But it makes it harder to feel sorry for them.

I don't feel sorry for them because for many of them all that mattered was their screen time and salary. John Forsythe's "notes to the producers" were about Blake having to be in the first and last scene of the episode. Collins cared that she get as much money as Evans and Forsythe.

But at the same time, both of them had been vocal that "no one was minding the store" in the middle of the Spelling-Shapiro lawsuit for example. Unlike Dallas, which gave certain actors too much power (call me Hagman and Duffy), Dynasty actors had occasional "line item veto" of particular developments, such as Forsythe demanding no divorce for Blake and Krystle, but they were not seriously listened to overall. They watched "talent" that was barely enough for one show be spread over two from 1985-1987, a revolving door of head-writers, mid-season retoolings with scripts scrapped and episodes re-shot, and too many cooks in the kitchen but all of them on a drop-in-and-out basis. So, what could they really have done?

I think there is an additional reason that many actors were not satisfied with how they were written for season 9, and that was simply because that ended up being the last season. TV critics had called Dynasty "most improved show" during season 9, so I don't believe one can argue that the show wasn't superior to the previous seasons, especially considering the abyss of season 7B. But especially for the last impression on the audience, John Forsythe probably did not like being the second more important male lead now, after Michael Nader (a change of which I approved) or Joan Collins having to out-bitch Stephanie Beacham (again, I loved it), or Gordon Thomson having to play cardboard villain Adam (as much distasteful to me as the pizza-eating Philly cop in Colorado). But I don't believe that most actors are great judges of quality anyway. Could Joan Collins really have complained for any Dynasty season after she herself had produced Monte Carlo?

Heather is debatable - she did feel like she was a spare part of Dynasty, which is fair enough. But that was around the reunion so it might've been her sense of the series as a whole rather than season 9.

It should also be noted that a lot, if not most, of the actors don't watch their own show - they go in, film their scenes (often out of order) and more or less have a vague understanding of what their storyline is. Just look at Patrick Duffy and Dallas - he really doesn't remember much. On the other hand Victoria Principal remembers a lot because she watched the episodes on television apparently.

I think that Emma Samms was very pleased with season 9 ;) I am surprised that Michael Nader maybe was not as satisfied as it looked from the show. He wanted to leave - at least, he had said it to the press before Dynasty was cancelled. But maybe it was a tactic how to get a higher salary.

I think it's intelligence. Locklear knew S9 was better.
I like Emma a lot, but I suspect she was just happy to still have a job.

That's how it struck me: posing, to get a raise.

    - in this interview he said: "I´m out of here if they don´t come talk to me ..." - it doesn´t sound like he wanted leaving really

Everything about her role improved in S9, how could she not be pleased?

Blake and Alexis got an interesting storyline about their past, Blake had to deal with Krystle's fate and Alexis finally got a worthy nemesis (i.e. someone other than Blake or Krystle) - JF & JC should have been very pleased.
Or did they feel they were forced to step out of their comfort zones?

Heather Locklear was, indeed, the unlucky one.

But Heather and Linda may have been objective enough to understand that the overall feel of the show for Season 9 was an improvement despite what their characters were doing (like, with Krystle, leaving). Some actors get that and some don't.

I never understood Virginia is there, but no Alexis ...

the cast picture of S6 was strange, too ...Bart was there instead of Clay (was it before they canceled the Romeo&Romeo storyline)? And no Steven and Dex, but Jackie ...

I suspect Joan boycotted both the S9 cast photos in protest of not being in 8 episodes.

I think Joan travelled a lot during the filming of season 9, especially to England and she was also promoting her novels. So she probably was absent from the studio when the cast pics were taken.

I also wondered about Bart in the season 6 Cast pic but just assumed the other actors are absent from the studio and he was asked to fill in the space.
