There has been a 10% rise in hate crimes recorded by police in England and Wales.

There were a record 103,379 offences in 2018-19, according to Home Office figures.

Transgender hate crime went up 37% to 2,333. For sexual orientation the rise was 25% to 14,491, for disability 14% to 8,256 and for religion 3% to 8,566.

Race hate crimes accounted for around three-quarters of offences (78,991) and rose by 11% on the previous year.

Over half (54%) of the hate crimes recorded by the police were for public order offences and a further third (36%) were for violence against the person offences.

Five per cent were recorded as criminal damage and arson offences.

There are many reasons but I think a lot can be attributed to Brexit.

Two thirds of the hate crime was racially motivated and has been rising ever since the Brexit vote. Also, our Prime Minister has used racist language to describe some BAME communities and there have been reports of people physically attacking Muslim women while repeating the racist language used by Boris Johnson.

Attacks on trans people have doubled and may be linked to anti-trans feeling encouraged by negative media coverage.

I was literally discussing this very issue at work today- Brexit has allowed so many racist people to crawl out from under their rocks. They've always been there, they just don't need to hide it anymore in the current political climate.

Well, Brexit has brought things under a magnifying lens, but I think these elements were there before. It's like people in the US thinking Trump brought all the racism, the misogyny, the xenophobia, etc.
