    Covid-19 Deaths

Yesterday the Tory government announced tragically there have been a total of 38,489 deaths in the UK due to Covid-19. Today they said there were an additional 111 recorded deaths and the new total is 39,045 which is in fact a daily increase of 556.

It would appear that Boris Johnson and the government have been revising the figures so they don't appear as bad. There were 445 extra deaths in England that they previously didn't attribute to Covid-19 and they slipped these deaths into the final figures for the May after they announced the daily increase hoping no one would notice.

Their manipulation of the data is shameful and shows they can't be trusted.

    Covid Alert Levels

On 16th May Boris Johnson addressed the nation and introduced the government's Covid Alert Levels:

At the time he said we were at level 4 and we wouldn't relax the lockdown until we are at level 3 and the slide he showed indicated the same.

I've just checked Public Health England's website (part of gov.uk) and regarding the Covid-19 risk it states "The risk to the UK is high", updated yesterday (31st May) confirming that the risk level hasn't changed. The government are now refusing to publish the current Covid Alert Level.

Boris Johnson said social distancing measures would only be relaxed "if the alert level allows it" but this was a lie. The alert level is still at 4 but he is sending children back to school, opening up more shops and and allowing more social interaction between people.

    Number of Covid-19 Tests

I pointed out on another thread that Boris Johnson and the Tories are lying about how many Covid-19 tests they are carrying out. Here are a few more details.

In early April the government said it would test 100,000 a day for Covid-19 by the end of April. The government failed to do this and lied that it had. On 1st May, the Health Secretary said they had carried out 122,347 tests but what he didn't mention was that on that day they only tested 73,191 people. Almost every day since then they have fallen woefully short of the 100,000 a day target.

The government then tried to deceive us by saying the target was only to provide the capacity to carry out 100,000 tests a day which was another lie as shown by their own tweet which clearly states the target was to test 100,000 people.

It now transpires that they also are fiddling the data by counting a nose and throat swab which is part of a single test as 2 separate tests.

To cover up their lies and shortcomings, they are now refusing to publish any data relating to the number of people that are being tested to hide how far behind the target they really are.

Impact of Covid-19 on BAME Communities

    Another day, another Tory lie.

In early May, health secretary Matt Hancock said “we recognise that there has been a disproportionately high number of people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds who have passed away, especially among care workers and those in the NHS.” As a result he commissioned a report which he said was "urgent" and promised to publish it "by the end of May."

The government has the report but are refusing to publish it because they haven't yet got a strategy of how to respond to it.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, British Medical Association council chair, said: "The government's commissioned review by Public Health England needs to be concluded as soon as possible in order for us to make sense of why this dreadful virus is impacting so adversely on the BAME community and, most importantly, what needs to be done to urgently protect them."

The government lying that they would publish the report by the end of last month will cost the lives of more black, Asian and minority ethnic people but to Boris Johnson and the Tories that is less important than protecting their reputation.

    UK Statistics Authority

The head of the UK Statistics Authority has accused the government of continuing to mislead the public over the numbers of tests carried out for Covid-19. “The aim seems to be to show the largest possible number of tests, even at the expense of understanding,” said Sir David Norgrove in a letter to the health secretary, Matt Hancock.

Aim To Keep Covid-19 Deaths Below 20,000

At today's Covid-19 daily briefing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock told another blatant lie. When challenged about the number of deaths due to Covid-19 being more than 3 times worse than what the government were hoping to keep the numbers under, he claimed the government never had a figure in mind rather than admitting the abject failure of their Covid-19 strategy. In April, the government's chief science adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has said the aim is to keep the number of coronavirus deaths below 20,000 so there was a figure and Hancock lied.

Coronavirus: 20,000 UK deaths would be 'good outcome', Sir Patrick Vallance said in March

    7. Chlorinated Chicken

In January, Boris Johnson's government promised “we will not be importing chlorinated-chicken" in response to suggestions that the UK would have poorer food standards in order to secure a post-Brexit trade deal with the USA. Previously, in 2017, Michael Gove said chicken will be allowed into British supermarkets (Michael Gove) Jan 2020: "We will not be importing chlorinated chicken” (Theresa Villiers, the environment secretary) They lied.

Today, it now appears that the government are going to ditch this pledge and will welcome having chlorinated chicken in our supermarkets which mean chickens will be reared in overcrowded conditions, having to wallow in their own faeces and be dipped in bleach before making it's way onto our dinner plates.

    8. Northern Ireland Customs Checks

"There will be no forms, no checks, no barriers of any kind. You will have unfettered access," Boris Johnson promised Northern Irish businessmen back in November. If anyone asked them to fill in new paperwork, they could “throw it in the bin” he said. He was lying.

The government has confirmed for the first time that there will be Brexit checks on animals and food goods entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK from next January.

This is sickening on so many levels. Just as it seemed progress was starting to be made in areas such as getting supermarkets to stop selling eggs from caged hens, this happens.

Presumably, getting the UK out of the EU was so important to ensure we could lower our animal rights, environmental and food standards from those in Europe to those in the United States in the name of a trade deal that benefits nobody in this country, guarantees the torture of animals for years to come and means we end up eating crap. It's twisted.

The government is wrong to do this on so many levels but the animal welfare case is overwhelming. American chicken faming involves packing large numbers of them into a small space may reduce costs but it also allows infection to run riot. Washing them in chlorine after they are slaughtered may not be entirely effective because there is evidence that chlorine washing doesn't kill all pathogens which may be why food poisoning from chicken in a bigger problem in the USA than it is in the UK.

It will be devastating for UK farmers too who may be forcedto go down the same route to compete with US chickens on price but that would close the EU market to them as the EU requires higher food standards.

I'm not too au fait with the details of the mooted trade deal, but I assume this situation would be very beneficial for the U.S, since the UK would be forced to trade on terms that are weighted towards strengthening the U.S. economy while the UK becomes dependent on them for trade. And I assume this is why Trump was so keen for Brexit to take place. Divide and conquer.

What I struggle to get my head round is why Johnson and the Tories are so keen for this to happen. All I've seen suggests it's not good for the country, so I can only assume it's for reasons other than the national interest.

The way these international trade deals work is give and take: the USA will say we will allow you to sell your cars, whiskey and cheese to us if you allow us to sell our chlorinated chicken and healthcare to you. So somewhere along the line you will find a group of businessmen that donate to the Tory party wanting access to the US market and if the price is that in return we have to buy certain goods from the US, the government will agree.

    9. The Timing Of The Lockdown

Boris Johnson and his government have always claimed they are "following the science" regarding Covid-19 but this clearly is not true. Today, Prof John Edmunds, a scientist who advises the government on coronavirus said "I wish we had gone into lockdown earlier, I think that has cost a lot of lives unfortunately." When this was put to the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, rather than admitting mistakes were made, he lied. He dishonestly claimed the Government "took the right decisions at the right time" and denied that delaying the decision lead to more deaths than were necessary.

    10. International Covid-19 Comparisons

Today during the daily briefing press conference, Boris Johnson said it was too early to compare Britain's Covid-19 record with other countries. This was a lie because until recently that was exactly what he had been doing. Every day for around 2 months at the daily press conference Johnson would show graphs comparing deaths in the UK with other countries. It's only now that the UK has the worst death rate in the world that he thinks it's wrong to compare with other countries.

The UK accounts for 0.87% of the world's population however our Covid-19 death toll accounts over at least 10% of the entire global death toll. That's the real reason why Johnson doesn't want international comparisons.

    11. Commitment To Dealing With Systemic Racism

Today at PMQs Boris Johnson lied when he said his government were already implementing recommendations of the Lammy report into the huge racial disproportionalities in the criminal justice system. He hasn't acted on any of the recommendations. In the UK, the average custodial sentence given to a black person found guilty of an indictable is still 10 years longer than that given to a white person.

Johnson also hasn't acted on the recommendations of the Windrush Lessons Learned Review and has not started the investigation into Islamophobia in his Conservative Party that he promised when he was standing for the leadership of his party.

    12. Developing a Covid-19 Contact Tracing App

At today's Government Covid-19 daily briefing, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government 'backed both horses' regarding developing a home-grown contact Covid-19 tracing app and working with Google and Apple to use their technology. This was a complete lie and he is trying to take the public for fools. For weeks his department have been absolutely insistent they had no interest in pursing the Apple Google model. When asked when the app will be brought online to help with track and trace Hancock says he's "not going to put a date on it". This was another lie as he had previously put the date on it of mid-May but he failed miserably to achieve this.

Why were the government so keen to develop a home-grown app from scratch instead of using the ready made one from Apple/Google? Was it so they could give millions of pounds of tax payers' money (reported as agreeing a contract to spend £108 million) to one of their friends to develop the app? By trying to line the pockets of their mates the government are allowing people to die because of the delay.

Developing a Covid-19 Contact Tracing App (Cont.)

At yesterday's Covid -19 briefing these were Matt Hancock's words to explain why they wasted millions of pounds on a home-grown contact tracing app that they are now abandoning:

"We’ve agreed to join forces with Google and Apple to bring the best bits of both (the UK and Google/Apple’s) systems together"

However, today Apple have confirmed that Matt Hancock was lying when they said:

"We don’t know what [the UK govt] mean… They haven’t spoken to us about it."

    13. Child Poverty

Last week in Parliament Boris Johnson claimed “absolute poverty and relative poverty have both declined under this government”. He was lying. The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England subsequently pointed out that Johnson was "generally false" (code for saying he told bare-faced lies) and that the truth is that 600,000 more children now live in relative poverty compared with 2012, and the total number of children in poverty was forecast to rise steeply. At Prime Minister's Questioned today Johnson was invited to correct his lie but he declined.

    14. Discrimination In The Criminal Justice System Against Black Britons

In Parliament Boris Johnson claimed that his party had implemented 16 of the recommendations of the Lammy report into the treatment of, and outcomes for, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals in the Criminal Justice System. This was a lie. Today in Parliament, David Lammy confirmed that Boris Johnson had failed to implement the majority of his recommendations and as a result the discrimination has got worse since the report was published.

    15. Local Leicester Lockdown

The Tory government publishes daily figures of the number of people tested positive for Covid-19 and they have been showing a steady decline in recent weeks. Boris Johnson used this as evidence to justify his recent easing of the lockdown. However, he was lying about these figures.

There are 2 sets of figures on Covid-19 infections: those carried out in hospital labs (mainly for NHS staff) and those carried out in private labs , including home test kits. The official figures the government have been publishing only includes the hospital tests even though they knew that around 90% of the people who have been found to be positive were in tests carried out in private labs. As a result, the people in Leicester were not aware of the levels Covid-19 circulating in their community because the figures the government gave to their local health authority was showing a fall to a current low level when in fact the true situation was that the virus was rampant and the infection rate was soaring. The government lies have probably lead to unnecessary deaths in Leicester as people were not warned to take adequate precautions.
