    Anyone been watching BLL?

I totally love it. It has a real vibe of early KL for me.

I keep reading critics mentioning it in comparison to KL.

On the flipside I see interviews with the actors saying it's the first female type show. Nope, it was done back in 1979.

I haven't watched this show. But I agree "Knots Landing" was definitely a female type show, as was "Desperate Housewives".

Still it's cool that KL is getting some mentions from critics.

Thanks for the tip. I went to have a look at a trailer:

I noticed it has Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in the cast. That alone would be enough reason to watch it. But unfortunately it's being broadcast on a channel I don't have access to! :(

There are definite parallels between "Big Little Lies", "Knots Landing" and "Desperate Housewives"; Witherspoon's character is even named Mackenzie and she's the first to welcome the new neighbor.

I remember how much Desperate Housewives was compared to Knots, but it turned out to be very different, much more overtly comedic and superficial. Which of the two does Big Little Lies most resemble?

There is nothing comedic about "Big Little Lies", it's pretty dark, despite that I found it to be closer to "Desperate Housewives". Imagine "D.H." with the comedic elements stripped away.

Most of modern television seems to require a certain slickness that makes it very entertaining and watchable, but it also leaves a wee guilty aftertaste.
I honestly couldn't compare BLL to Knots Landing, and certainly not the grittier early years.
When Knots did dark it wasn't necessarily about something sinister or suspenseful, but more like a sincere feeling of gloom and dispair.
It's Joshua Rush literally being hated to death.
Somehow I just can't find that in modern tv drama*, it's inherently too pretty and optimistic, regardless of the more graphic scenes (which, I think, is often done because they can).
There's nothing about BLL that lingers, it never feels like "I can't believe this is happening!", but it is a few hours of addictive soap. My recommendation would be based on Laura Dern's tour de force.

On a side note, HBO isn't what it used to be, imho. There was a time in the late 90s/2000s when they couldn't do wrong, but these days it seems like just another netflix.

*there are a few exceptions, like Doctor Foster. It's a great example of ugly drama.

I think it's the setting, the coastal community feel that Knots seemed to be aiming for in its early episodes. Also dropping in on the different families at breakfast time - the contrasting environments and moods in each home - feels very much like early Knots.

I hated Desperate Housewives eventually, I was rather disappointed by it. BLL feels like early Knots. It's wonderfully written, fabulous characters and full of nuance. I was getting so bored with the generic dramas in the vein of Greys Anatomy or those other rather sterile dramas.

I found this to be intelligent with shades of light and dark woven together really well.

It's been the most enjoyable show I have seen for a very long time. Zoe Kravitz and Nicole Kidman were fantastic. I also enjoyed Meryl Streep in season 2, although I found it a little difficult to see her character beyond it being Meryl Streep playing a character, if that makes sense.
