I think it was some time in the late 90s or early 2000s that I first heard people, usually very young people, talking about there being two kinds of men: alpha and beta.

I don't know if that's still a thing people talk about that much. I heard a lot of people talking about it like ten years ago or maybe even 5 years ago, but I rarely hear it now. Was it just another fad that died out? I always found it very simplistic - like saying every man is either a hero or a villain. No. Most people are shades of gray and I believe that goes for the idea of there being alpha and beta males as well. It's an oversimplification, so I never put much stock into it. What do you think?

Wow. That's hardly appealing is it? This just adds to my belief that the whole idea of aspiring to be "more alpha" never made sense.

The alpha male is a brusque bully who lacks empathy. However, you need his take-charge and strength sometimes. One who is always categorically the beta male can be a wussy push-over.

I don't know if there is a female version or if women are always considered betas.

The whole Alpha Male concept was basically debunked in the mid-2010s. I can't recall exact details, but I think that the writers of the study had omitted a lot of data that would have diluted their pre-drawn conclusion, which tends to be the downfall of many sociological studies.
