Even more than the silver turkey baster?
Let's not mention that
So I am nearing the 100th episode now. Caitlyn and Cole are trying to run away, but as this is a daytime soap they are being overtaken by passing snails and a sloth. Gregory manages to apprehend them and be all shouty which is strangely hot. He could be shouting in that grotto with Cole and Caitlyn for the next 9 episodes which would only be one morning in Sunset Beach. EDIT - I'm wrong. Cole pushed Gregory and then he and Caitlyn legged it and off they ran...
Gregory is also representing Cole's mother Elaine during her murder trial which is only slightly less engrossing that the O.J Simpson trial.
Gabby is being a slutty little minx and trying to seduce Ricardo right under half sister Paula's nose. Taking lots of steamy showers and walking around in a towel or a micro bikini the normal stuff you wear when staying at your sisters boyfriends one bedroom studio.
Bette and Oliva have a weird friendship. They are kind of Frienimies. And at the same time they are engaged in a battle of soaptastic wig proportions. I don't think I will know who the victor is until I have seen the last episode. You can always enjoy some diva hair porn when Bette and Olivia are on screen. I love it!!!!!
Vanessa is being shipped off to Hong Kong to work as a boring reporter there. Only I know she wont leave, because she's jealous of Virginia and rightly so. That bitch has designs on Michael. But Vanessa is a fool to trifle with Virginia cos that whack job is gonna unless the Voodoo. I'm just here quietly counting down the days until I see Vanessa's face starts looking like a rice krispie treat!
Meg's mom and dad have arrived from Kansas and aren't too taken with flashy mysterious Ben Evens. Especially when he weirdly reveals that some people think he killed his wife Maria. That was kind of an awkward thing to drop into the conversation at such an early stage. Buy hey!
Annie and ridiculously attractive Tim (who needs to wear less clothes and definitely not a suit!) have formed a bond and united to break up Ben and Meg. I hope the plan involves Tim in speedos.
Well I have dived back into the murky waters of Sunset Beach. Casey's mum has shown up, Alex Mitchum. She's some explorer/world known photographer. Always in some random part of the world. She's played by Barbara Mandrell who is some kind of weird hybrid of Ann Margret and Angie Dickinson. I mean it's weird as hell and I love her for it. I want her to stick around but I remember that this doesn't end well and that she's got some kind of terminal illness and dies pretty soon. Which is a shame as I do like the actress. Apparently she's a big shot country singer. Hey Ho...
Olivia and Bette have been talking, and then Olivia felt queasy. Never the dimwit Bette, realises that Olivia is suffering from morning sickness. She's pregnant with Cole's baby! Obviously her daughter Caitlyn is peeing on a sick as I type and will soon discover she is also pregnant by the stud muffin supreme! And then follows one of the most exciting storylines from this show that I can remember. Apparently Olivia is two weeks pregnant, and it feels like she slept with Cole 9 months ago. I would guess she's going to pregnant for at least a year in real time.
Speaking of memorable stories from the show, Ben is having more Maria flashbacks, and pushing that swing on the beach with nobody in it while looking all dreamy. And getting into cryptic arguments with Ricardo, Maria's brother about her death. It's all heating up right now. I mean in one episode I have had about 6 flashback scenes all amounting to nothing. Is it really a flashback if they don't actually remember anything or further the story. Or is it really just stalling for time?
I am really loving Annie and Tim's dastardly duo thing. I think there is a strange '60s tv vibe about them and I am here for it. I want them to flirt more though and explore that angle, and I know it doesn't happen. They really should have paired them up at some point romantically.
Caitlyn's hair just gets bigger and bigger every time she appears. It's ginormous!
Barbara Mandrell has a list of country-music awards a mile long. As a child I remember watching her variety show. I think her trip to Sunset Beach was her only major acting effort; I would liken it to Betty White's turn on The Bold and the Beautiful, a sort of stunt casting where a performer known from a different genre takes a soap role just to see if they can do it. I liked the sight gag of tall, hot Casey having this petite mother.
Oh, and if a man is going to go around creating lots of babies with random women, at least it's a drop-dead gorgeous hunk like Cole. People who look like that ought to be encouraged to have dozens of equally beautiful children....to cancel out all the ugly, stupid people having packs of equally ugly, stupid kids.
So I have still been watching away. Casey's mom Alex has revealed that she's dying from terminal cancer. It's actually going on a lot longer than I expected or remembered. I could have sworn she was only a handful of episodes but she's still here. I like her though, I just wish the story was something different.
Annie and Tim's plotting to keep Ben and Meg apart is really picked up. Annie, has splattered fake blood all over Maria's locked art studio then planted seeds for Meg to see what lies beyond the locked door. Of course Meg breaks in and dresses up in Maria's wedding dress and steals her diary. Cos' that's the kind of shit Meg does.
Anyways unknown to Meg Annie has forged some diary entries in Maria's old diary to plant seeds that Ben is a dangerous man and could even have killed her. It's all a bit much... I love it! While all this is going on Ben just seems to be getting ever more nuts and ever more grumpy.
Meg continues to be ultra annoying. I really cant believe how much I rooted for her as a teenager. Like she was my favourite character. What little I knew of the world.
Olivia booked an appointment to have an abortion to get rid of Cole's baby. Of course wires got crossed, as she booked the appointment under the name of Mrs Cole. When Olivia was out Caitlyn answered a call confirming the appointment. Initially thinking it was a routine doctor appointment she missed. She asks a few questions and learns the appointment is for an abortion. She races to the hospital and finds Olivia and she explains she needs to have the abortion as Gregory would not forgive her having another mans child, actually the child is Caitlyn's husband's.
Meanwhile back at the Richards house, Cole and Olivia cant find their respective wives, then Rose the maid says that Caitlyn went to the hospital. They go to the hospital in a panic and Gregory pesters the staff looking for his wife. All the while Olivia is a few feet away about to have her abortion. She hesitates feeling something strange...
This lasts approximately 167 days. I think they are all still at the hospital, but right now we are focused on Gabby's trying to get Mark to believe that Ricardo has been coming on to her, even though it's very much the other way around.
I spoke to soon about Alex... She and Casey are leaving town for a while to find some treatment. Off to Oslo to start a clinical trial. I have NO MEMORY of this.
Meg has just handed her notice in to Ben, she's quitting her job. Guess Annie's creative writing worked.
It's funny seeing how they are redressing and reusing some of the sets. The Richards family living room is also the fancy restaurant Julien's that most of the richer characters dine at. They just put plants everywhere and some tables and chairs. Also Olivia and Gregory's bedroom has been used as a few other homes, including Coles' grandma Deschanel.
Oh it's been a while!
Since I last watched the opening credits have changed to the ones that are a bit Baywatch. I don't love this intro. The first opening credits were AMAZING. That jazzy bluesy theme with the Sax. The glossy head shots and dramatic turn arounds in black and white against the glowing sunset beach. Perfection.
The new opening is generic and less soapy. Maybe they were trying to appeal to a younger audience but I much prefer my soaps glossy and a bit arch/camp.
Anyways so now Ben and Meg are trapped inside the grotto. There was some building work going on near there organised by Gregory and there was an explosion and a mini earth quake and so they got trapped down there. They are running out of air. Now everybody... EVERY! BODY!, is trying to get them out.
Annie has a brainwave and remembers that she and Maria used to know about tunnels at The Deep (that used to be a Speak Easy, according to local historian Elaine) and so they may lead to the grotto. This makes no real sense at all, but I'mma go with it.
Cole still doesn't know that his super seed has impregnated mother and daughter. Bette is putting out feelers to see if she can get a job as a social columnist for Gregory. I mean she's gotta be a better journalist that Vanessa?
Sean and Caitlyn's brother sister bonding scenes make we want to vomit. Randy Spelling is an excruciatingly bad actor and he seems to bring out terrible performances in his co-stars.
Ben and Meg are talking in the grotto and waiting to be rescued and Ben offers some foreshadowing about his brother. Here though he calls his brother Ted, twice! As far as I remember Ben's evil twin was called Derek? Not unless he's under an assumed name when he shows up? From Ben's talk of his brother it's clear they are estranged although he doesn't say why.
So Ben and Meg trapped and alone and covered in rubble decide to do the dirty deed. Only in the half hearted throes of it all, Ben says "I Love You..." then "I love you Maria!" well Meg is not best pleased.
He's obviously sustained a head injury because when she freaks out he still thinks Meg is his wife. So Meg was made love to as a dead woman.
I just don't know what to think.
Meanwhile the rescue team which consists of EVERYONE is about to use dynamite to blow a hole in the cave and rescue them, before Ben calls Meg Maria for the 683222876th time.
She should have called out the name Ted in the throes of passion just to pass him off right back.
Oh she's not that quick. And she's just way too drippy for that. I have watched 3 episodes tonight and she's cried through them all. God I hate her.
I'm still watching away. At around episode 170 and just sat here waiting for a plot to get explosive. I think I may be on to something here. Jack Wagner has just showed up, on a private jet. On his way to Grenadines Sunset Beach's local fancy eatery. Well it's really just the Richards living room redressed but shuuusshhh…
Anyway Peter Burns is on Sunset Beach! That's a bit surreal was he on Melrose Place in 1997? What's going on here?
In other weird news, Annie and Tim have somehow hypnotized Ben into saying "I love you Maria" when Meg calls him by his name. Which is terrible for their budding relationship. So no Meg is leaving Sunset Beach to go back to Kansas. Well we'll see how long that lasts.
At the end of the last episode I looked like Caitlyn had twigged that Olivia was the woman that Cole had an affair with. Surely this was misdirection as I feel this plot will play out for 5000 episodes.
Gaby is starting to have some weird anger outbursts and it all seemed very strange then I remembered that there is a whole arc coming up here. She accuses Ricardo of rape and it all goes to trial and all that then it comes out that he didn't rape her, that she was abused as a child?
THE Pete(r) Burns???
Errrmmmm. No. Jack Wagner.
Give or take.
Frankly I'm surprised SuBe didn't have a constant parade of Aaron Spelling-contracted actors from his primetime shows in an effort to drum up viewer interest. Jack Wagner of course already had a firm following in daytime when he was hired by Melrose Place, so he was a natural choice to stunt-cast on SuBe. He'd already had that questionable run as Warren Lockridge in the final years of Santa Barbara in addition to his career-establishing role as Frisco on General Hospital, so the 3pm slot on daytime soaps was a second home for the guy.
Foreshadowing alert: Lesley-Anne Down would later play Jack Wagner's mother on THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. I didn't even know he was on SUNSET BEACH until someone pointed it out on YouTube.
I had totally forgot that even though I had just recently been watching B&B clips with them in them on YouTube.
I have two different B&B sets, and the SUNSET BEACH set from Germany. I wish there was more of it, because I really enjoyed some of the characters. I don't know about the final year, though, as I had pretty much given up on all the soaps at that point.
My B&B How It All Began Collection 3 arrived today, so just waiting on the first 2 to get here. I know what you mean about the last year of Sunset Beach. In the last year I think the moved it from an early morning daytime slot here of 10 or 10.30am to an early evening slot of about 5.30 or 6pm. I guess it was an attempt to increase viewership and it likely did work but the storylines at the time felt worse then before. Especially that whole Rosario Jewels nonsense. I even remember Channel 5 in the UK offering to part fund the show but NBC weren't interested.
Yes, by mid-1998 they had pretty much decided to ditch both SuBe and Another World, but would not say as such in public. Instead, NBC made the mistake of hinting that they'd cancel one of the shows to make way for Passions, a soap they were highly invested in (literally and emotionally). So both soaps went pretty much off the deep end trying to throw everything out there in an effort to "out-perform" their competitor, to "win the contest" to stay on the air, a contest neither was destined to win. Instead they wasted those final months on wacky, "shocker" plots that did not grab the sort of attention they wanted (that is, ratings) and instead only made their long-time fans scratch their heads.
