This is the continuation of our ‘Members Chosen Word’ task and each week when we vote on our favourite pickings, we will take a guess at who suggested the current word/theme.

Nominate 20 songs themed on the best use of strings

    Strings.png

Posting a link for each nomination would be ideal, that way others can watch/listen and decide whether they want to include that song in their final ten.

If possible (not compulsory) try to avoid posting the videos as this slows down the thread.

Staying in the same format. Once the nominations are complete, I will post the final list and everyone can then check out all the nominated songs and vote for their favourite ten from other member's lists.

Duplicates are more than welcome, but they won't be included when we take the vote
    [IMG]
To clarify for any newcomers: The idea is, we all nominate songs we like (based on the title/theme of the thread). We then check out each other's nominations and pick a favourite ten from their lists.

20 songs are the maximum, but if you don't have 20, anything less is fine.

Everyone is welcome to join in and nominate 20 songs

    Last day for nominations is
    Sunday 23rd June

    Prelude - Joel McNeely
Psycho is my favourite film score largely because it’s written for and performed entirely on just strings. And it sounds amazing.

Only You [Live for Burberry] - Alison Moyet
I discovered this one thanks to the old forum. The strings start strong and remain an important part of this song all the way through.

You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra
Everyone knows these sweeping strings of John Barry. And everyone knows to which series they belong. They're almost as iconic as the 007 theme. Some might even say more so.

Ever True Evermore - Mandy Barnett
The energetic use of the violin (or fiddle, if you prefer) is what makes this song a standout.

    Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson
Some seriously great string action going on in this one.

I (Who Have Nothing) - Shirley Bassey
Oh… the drama. The stringy drama.

    Lacrymosa - Evanescence
Evanescence gets a touch of the Mozarts with some haunting gothic strings.

If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
One of THE most iconic intros. And it won a Grammy for the strings!

    Last Dance - Donna Summer
It’s common knowledge round here that I think Last Dance is the perfect song in so many ways. The vocal. The bass. The arrangement. And those strings take it to disco heaven. Ebbing and flowing in the ballad prelude, before taking on a life of their own about one and a half minutes into the song.

The Look Of Love - Tina Arena
Those mellow strings give this such a relaxed and comfortable vibe.

    Don’t Stop - Madonna
When this topic came up, the stabbing Seventies strings that begin halfway through the intro were the first thing that came to mind.

    Hilltop Scene - Frédéric Talgorn
This would be nothing without the beautiful strings leading the way. And it incorporates not one but TWO magnificent renditions of the main Peyton Place theme.

Can't Get You Out Of My Head [Abbey Road Sessions] - Kylie Minogue
Frenetic and driving. This strung-out version takes a familiar song somewhere even more special.

As Good As New - ABBA
A great string intro and the strings also help the choruses bob along.

    Unchained Melody - Mantovani
How could I not include Mantovani’s sweeping strings in this round? The beauty of this arrangement moves me every time I hear it.

    Queens Story - Salaam Remi
    Such a great sound.

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going - Bonnie Tyler
This orchestral arrangement captures the fragility of the moment and the sweeping love that motivates the protagonist.

Because Of You - Kevin Rowland feat. Dexy’s Midnight Runners
As with the Mandy Barnett song, it’s the violin that makes this one memorable. Along with its Brush Strokes association.

    Fever - Boney M.
Like Last Dance, the beauty of the strings in this one can only be appreciated by listening to the entire song with an ear out for how they’re used. Subtle to start, and at the lower end of the scale. They carry the song along and sweep with the best of them.

On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)- Barbra Streisand
The strings run the entire length of the song, matching Babs line for line as she moves from gently reflective to rearing back, opening up and letting fly.

    Prelude - Joel McNeely
Only You [Live for Burberry] - Alison Moyet
You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra
Ever True Evermore - Mandy Barnett
    Stomp! - The Brothers Johnson
I (Who Have Nothing) - Shirley Bassey
    Lacrymosa - Evanescence
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
    Last Dance - Donna Summer
The Look Of Love - Tina Arena
    Don’t Stop - Madonna
    Hilltop Scene - Frédéric Talgorn
    Disco Inferno - Marcia Hines
Can't Get You Out Of My Head [Abbey Road Sessions] - Kylie Minogue
As Good As New - ABBA
    Unchained Melody - Mantovani
    Queens Story - Salaam Remi
And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going - Bonnie Tyler
Because Of You - Kevin Rowland feat. Dexy’s Midnight Runners
    Fever - Boney M.
On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever) - Barbra Streisand

Are you including guitars or just strings as traditionally defined by orchestras, i.e. violins, violas, cellos and double basses?

Yes, I believe the member wanted to give a wider range by including any string instrument.

The mastermind behind this week's theme did not intend the guitars and was more about strings as traditionally defined by orchestras, i.e. violins, violas, cellos and double basses as @Angela Channing mentioned earlier.

So, if you haven't already made your list - no guitars, but if you have, keep them in.

I was literally just about to post my list. These great tunes were the last 4 that I added so I could have some prominent guitar strings in my list.

    17. No Woman No Cry - Bob Marley

    18. Puff The Magic Dragon - Peter, Paul & Mary

    19. If You Tolerate This Then Your Children Will Be Next - Manic Street Preachers

    20. Father & Son - Cat Stevens

Back to finding 4 more with violins!

Not a problem, I just remembered Stand By Me has a brilliant violin section towards the end which wouldn't have been in my original list.

I've edited my noms to fit in with the theme, removing guitar-heavy songs by The Shadows and Carps.

And as the pedal steel guitar is even less orchestral Martina, too, is out.

In their place come Tina, Bonnie and Kylie.

This round is really grabbing me. I can't stop thinking of, and listening to, more songs where the string is king.

So, with apologies to everyone else and to Marcia Hines, I've edited my noms (hopefully for the last time) to include a Bondian piece that's been swirling round my head this morning.

I started my nominations yesterday afternoon because I had Mika, Kate Bush & Echo & the Bunnymen in my head. I didn't want to forget them and I'm not savvy when it comes to jotting down notes on my phone.

Then last night I added more to where I had 23 songs. So I decided to get them up this morning and even then I changed my list again and again.

And already I want to change and add this

    & this

    & then I remembered this

So I'm off and not coming back here until the weekend

I think the strings were standard in the 1970s, rather than the exception.
I randomly clicked on a YouTube suggestion, et voila - strings.
