Okay so next up is a contemporary star:

    3d565875-b0ab-412d-bbba-68234d2ff4bd.png

Colin Firth is an English actor. He was born on 10th September, 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, England. He is the oldest of three children and both his parents worked at teachers at a University. Due to that his father also worked as an education officer for the Nigerian government Firth spent some years of his childhood in Nigeria. He also lived briefly in Missouri, USA. When he returned to England he didn’t fit in at school and was bullied by his classmates.

Colin Firth started taking drama classes at the age of ten and by the time he was 14 he knew he wanted to become an actor. So after graduating from Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh he joined the National Youth Theatre and went on to study at the Drama Centre London. It was there he was spotted by a talent agent and offered his first role in a professional production in 1983, which was Another Country in the West End. He made his film debut in the movie a year later. In 1987 he was considered to be a part of the “Brit Pack” a group of young promising actors. His International breakthrough came in 1995 when he portrayed Mr. Darcy in Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice. It made him a household name and lead to further success.

Colin Firth has won an academy awards for The King’s Speech (2010). He has also starred in a number of commercially successful movies. All together he’s starred in approximately 60 movies so far. But which one is your favorite?

Hi to all here. First time posting my list though I’ve been reading here off and on.

Colin Firth has appeared in some duds, but he’s always entertained me in some fashion and to varying degrees each time. I don’t have a favoured Top 10 movie list of his, so I’ve gone for a sampling of his movies beyond the rom-coms.

In no order of preference or excellence:

    1. Steve (a short film with a social message, a vignette seemingly distilled from Apartment Zero)

    2. Apartment Zero (set in Argentina, and also stars the son of Dynasty’s Lloyd Bochner as the character who is the catalyst for events)

    3. When Did You Last See Your Father

    4. My Life So Far (set in 1920s Scotland, based on the (childhood) memoirs (of life on the family estate) of Sir Denis Forman, a former director of the Royal Opera House. He is represented by the child character Fraser, whose dad Edward Pettigrew (CF) is “a mechanical genius” and inventor at heart who runs Europe’s only sphagnum moss factory. I howled when Fraser said: “The only language me and my dad really understood was dog.” ….Alas, Edward is only the son-in-law; and the reappearance of his brother-in-law back at the family home, sets the scene/tone for the rest of this movie.

    5. Master of the Moor (a Ruth Rendall mystery adaptation) A moor-loving man raised alone by his father after his mother deserts the family sees his childhood precognition of 3 murders on the moor come true. …Oh! Not a true movie? ….Okay, I’ll substitute it with a bereavement movie, A Summer in Genoa. It’s a movie made with just the camera men and little else; where the director chose not to say “action” or “cut”. Where the scripts ended, the dialogue was left to continue improvised.

    6. Wings of Fame (there’s no mistaking that some events in the life of the character Bianca in the movie and the actress who played her, Marie Trintignant, are the inspiration for Nicole Kidman’s character in Before I Go to Sleep)

    7. Trauma (which features a female tarantula, whom the cast named Colin)

    8. The Secret Laughter of Women …Not surprising CF wanted to act in this. He was raised in Nigeria from 2 weeks old for some 3+ years, was well integrated with the locals and has made almost yearly pilgrimages to Africa to introduce it to his children. (And not surprising that he badly wanted to produce a movie about a couple arrested in Virginia in 1958 for the crime of interracial marriage. http://ew.com/article/2016/11/16/colin-firth-loving-interview )

    9. A Single Man

    10. The King’s Speech

I haven't cheated by counting the votes, but I do hope that The King's Speech wins. Colin won an Oscar for that role, and I am always moved by his portrayal in this excellent biography flick.

    Monster Films

Okay so with Halloween right around the corner I figured it was time for a theme and since we’ve already done horror films I thought we’d focus on the sub-genre “Monster Films” this week.

A Monster Film is a genre where a monster is at the focus of the plot. The monster can be giant animals, aliens, mutants, supernatural creatures or creatures from folklore.

Thanks for @Emelee for the suggestion. :)

I really liked Medusa but the movie wasn't only about her, so...

    1. Alien (1979) - I also liked all the sequels but I want to give the other monsters a chance to appear in my top 10 too.
    2. Cloverfield (2008)
    3. The Faculty (1998)
    4. Piranha (1978) - is it a monster movie? Or lots of mini-monsters?
    5. King Kong (2005)
    6. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
    7. War Of The Worlds (2005)
    8. Anaconda (1997)
    9. Jurassic Park (1993)
    10. Razorback (1984)
