Who was the most convincing as 'Doctor Who?', bearing in mind that there were eight of them: -
Cue the spooky theme tune.

What? No Peter Cushing?!! ...or Trevor Martin.....?...or Richard Hurndall?
Out of those on the list, I found Patrick Troughton (The Second Doctor) to be the most convincing. He gave a rich performance, full of nuance. As an actor, he always looked for the truth in the situation and wanted to know why his character was doing things. Consequently, when faced with the more unbelievable happenings, Patrick would bring believability to his performances. He could handle the most touching scenes, effortlessly reel off the scientific dialogue and had superb comedic timing.....("somewhere between Laurence Olivier and Charlie Chaplin", director Michael Ferguson has described him) filtered through a wise but dotty uncle persona and occasionally gave thrilling glimpses of his alien nature. Even when reduced to pure audio (since so many of his episodes are missing), his performance stands out as being something special....and he brought a certain naughtiness to the part. His Doctor had more mystery and layers to him than most of the others..and was somewhat manipulative. He also seemed vulnerable at times. Rather than having a 'fixed' personality, this Doctor's mood and expression could change greatly, depending on the situation. He seemed genuinely scared of some of the monsters he encountered, which instantly made them seem more terrifying, although beneath this he was really brave....almost like he was wearing masks....getting monsters and d other people to underestimate him. There's this sort of spontaneous energy to his performance that makes him very convincing and when you watch him, it's not really like watching an actor just going through his scenes (Hi, Jon Pertwee!) but you don't doubt that you're watching the Doctor. Patrick even made a marvellous villain (very different to his performance as the Doctor) when he had a dual role. Lovely speaking voice, too. The Second Doctor seemed to be the cuddliest, most huggable Doctor and yet seemed more prone to electrocute or blow creatures up than any of the others! He seemed to have warmer and closer friendships with his companions than his predecessor (whom Patrick had followed with a very different performance, that helped secure the future of the series). He was also the first Doctor to keep pulling all sorts of items from his pockets....jelly babies, tuning fork, telescope, magnets, marbles, sonic screwdriver etc. Both Peter Davison and Colin Baker state that Patrick was their favourite Doctor. Jon Pertwee said he loved to watch Patrick's episodes. David Tennant (my other favourite) has said that he loves Troughton's Doctor, saying he was someone you could believe had "magic in him".
No wonder fans nickname him "The Mighty Trout"!

Love Tom, love Pat, love DT
When someone said Patrick Troughton was genuine, i think that is so true. There is something magnificent about how he played the Doctor.

In order of preference:
Tom, Peter, Patrick, William, Jon, Paul, Colin, Sylvester.
On one level, I think that I can't really rank them (and where's Edmund Warwick?) because they're all playing the same person.
On another level, I'd plump for Peter Cushing. He was the only one playing "Doctor Who".....Whoops! I've gotten into the Doctor Who/The Doctor screen credit debate. Time to move on.
On another level, I think of it as being the one bringing the most actor's experience, skills and depth to the part. Then I'd plump for Patrick Troughton first and happily dump Jon Pertwee last. But if I was thinking of the Doctor being an action hero, I'd probably put Jon, David, Peter and Chris first. If for those stressing the Doctor's 'alien' qualities most, it would be Peter last.....and Tom, Colin, David, Patrick, Sylvester first. If thinking of the one with the most authority, I'd put William first. Then I'd think of his Doctor's fight in The Romans, boasting of teaching the art of fighting to the Mountain Mauler of Montana....so he was an action man after all!
If including the ongoing BBC 7 Doctor Who series starring Paul McGann and the Big Finish audio CD releases, starring Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann, I find that my appreciation for Doctors six and eight leaps.
I suppose it may depend on what you think the Doctor should be like and how each actor met the criteria. Problem is, I don't know what the criteria is or should be....although it can't be Tom. My ability to be convinced by him wobbled too often during seasons sixteen and seventeen....even if he was brilliant....
....but not up to Patrick's standard.Patrick never made it wobble....
