Did Mack stop loving Karen's kids?

After his big, ugly, character-destructive "Eric/Michael/Paige aren't my real children because I didn't raise them" speech at Laura's funeral, and when Meg came into his life, didn't it seem like Mack stopped caring about Michael and Eric? He suddenly saw them only through Karen's eyes. They were always just her kids, and he put up with them because of her. I remember when he bellowed to Michael, "she's your MOTHER, forgive her", and didn't even try approaching him as a stepfather or a friend. He also shared no goodbye or a hint of a goodbye with Eric or Michael.

The writers seemed to decide that Mack had enough kids and didn't need his old brood. That's a shame, because Mack's immediate acceptance of and love for Eric and Michael was a big reason why I was such a fan of Mack's in the first place.

one thing I loved about Knots was how mack, greg and Gary, ben became fathers to children who were not theirs.

ben- decided to adopt the twins

Gary- good stepfather of Brian and olivia even after he and Abby split.

Greg- got mad when laura left the boys with richard, that's how much jason and daniel meant to him. he saw them as his boys.

Mack- to me, mack was always a good father to eric and michael except for diana of course.

Noone ever mentioned her when she left. Maybe once every 4 seasons, but thats it. She did give good reason though. Mack will mention all the other kids before he'll mention her! I don't know about when she was originally on the show, but he didn't even talk to her much in the reunion.
