    Default Bob Dylan

Any Dylan fans on this board?

I wouldn't say his songwriting was as catchy as McCartney/Lennon and I wouldn't put him up as high as The Beatles but he is IMO in the top 5 most important musicians of all time. I used to hate him but the more I listen, the more his songs grow on me. I can only imagine what kind of impact his songwriting had on those that grew up in the Vietnam era.

I don't dispute Dylan's status among musical legends, but he's always been more of an acquired taste than the other usual suspects among 'all-time music icons.' To deny Dylan's importance is like saying CITIZEN KANE was overrated; you can't do it without risk of being labelled a musical ignorant.

But no doubt he was heavilly influential on John Lennon; just introducing the Beatles to marijuana changed rock music irrevocably. And "Positively 4th Street" is probably the greatest put-down song ever.

Hmm I know a lot of people who have similar opinions. I don't dispute what you are saying though. He has grown on me a lot over the past year just because of his lyrics and I don't even agree with them always. I really like his folk sound though, and how his songs sound like a great mix between rock and country.

"Lay Lady Lay," from the 1969 country-ish album NASHVILLE SKYLINE, is one of my favorites. His voice sounds completely different than the Dylan we're used to.

Just Like A Woman and Lay Lay Lay are my 2 fave Bob Dylan songs. And his version of Tambourine Man.
My avatar is an autograph of Coronation Street's Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner, an original character) which he personalised for me.

    I would.

Highway 61 Revisited is the first Dylan LP I fell in love with and such remains the closest to my heart. But I do have a particularly soft spot for this song, which isn't generally regarded as important or a classic or anything, but who really cares about all that rubbish?:

One of my party tricks is doing an impression of Dylan singing the theme tune from FRIENDS.

What's funny is I could almost see that as a lighter song that Dylan would write, in the vein of To Make You Feel My Love.

Funny. One of my favorite songs wasn't written by Bob Dylan, but rather about him.

It also works with the theme from PRISONER CELL BLOCK H.

    And here's another one:

I felt the same for years. Amazing, though, how wandering around iTunes can help you discover songs and performers you never paid attention to in the past. I've downloaded a few of her songs now, mainly because I like their honest, introspective lyrics.

The Beatles were a huge success but the difference between the Beatles and Dylan is huge....The Beatles were out to be a commercial success were as Dylan never cared about being number 1 on the charts. Dylan cared about what he wrote...about the times he wrote them in. I am a huge Dylan fan...seen him many times in concert and he may not have the best voice but his lyric's are amazing......
One of my all time favorite songs by Dylan is Forever young...sorry don't know how 2 add a video here

I'd easily rate Robbie Zimmerman on a par with the Beatles any day. Bob Dylan all the way.

The Beatles certainly cared about what they wrote. And while they were the most commercial act ever, the fact is that what they did was so commercial because it was good. Once they were writing RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, SGT. PEPPER'S, and what came after, what they were producing didn't fit the parameters of 'commercial.' It became commercial because of its high quality.
