Default Gary and the mineral rights

This morning I was thinking that it was actually very stupid of Gary to side with Bobby and Ray on this.
He was more or less broke at the end of Knots Landing and lost his ranch.
And now he has the chance to come into money again and doesn't go for it? Just imagine he was still married to Abby she would have beaten the crap out of him.

I think it would be very much in character for Gary to respect Miss Ellie's wishes just like Bobby has.

I don't think there would ever be a time where Gary would side with JR over Bobby. Ray has nothing to do with the mineral rights either.

I think Gary would do whatever allowed him to "stay the hell out of" any more Ewing family dramas having to do with oil and the ranch. Had he sided with JR/John Ross, he (probably) would have made some money, but every time he turned around, someone from Dallas would be hitting him up for his input into whatever conflict the Ewings had, since he (Gary) was actively choosing sides. It would obviously hurt Bobby, who has always been nice to Gary and Val, and make Gary feel a bit Judas, since he sold out his brother for money. Siding with Bobby was the quickest, easiest way to say "leave me alone".

It was never fully addressed, but Gary and Val were hardly destitute after losing the ranch. Val was a wealthy author who had enough to support them. After a while, he started his own construction company and got back to his "upper middle class" roots prior to his inheritance.

Right, forgot about that. Poor Ray. Just because he's not Miss Ellie's son I guess? But this is so unfair, he was the one who took care of the ranch for all these many years while Bobby & JR only cared about Ewing Oil. And plus, Miss Ellie always tried to treat Ray like a son.

You guys are all right about Gary. He would not have disrespected Miss Ellie's wishes and he would not want to side with JR on anything.
But here's me thinking in an abby-ish way.

Ray is not an owner in the mineral rights, just Miss Ellie's three sons. HOWEVER, now that Bobby has agreed to the "slant drilling" of SF via the adjacent Henderson property where they have secured the leases, Bobby, JR and Gary will make billions. Remember, all three own the mineral right to the two billion barrel oil reserve, and all three will share equally in the profits. 2 billion divided by three equals approximately 67 billion barrels a piece; value is approximately 67 billion per brother. JR is back and is a billionaire again, even without owning SF. So, his scheming this season to grab SF for the oil John Ross discovered may not have worked out the way he intended, but certainly put things in motion to where all the pieces fell into place. He still has it in him, after all, he's at least proven to himself that he still has the "golden touch" by being able to get SF. He chose to sign it back over to Bobby, it was not taken away from him. Although, it looks like he did it just in time as the Venezuelan deal looks like it's going to fall apart completely by the season finale.

Gary was a mama's boy and never would have went against Miss Ellie's wishes, no matter what. I don't think money and power were ever all that important to him, even when he was rich on Knots. Seemed to me that was more Abby's game. Gary wasn't cut out to be rich anyway.

I would have hoped Ray would ultimately be included in the mineral rights--I was disappointed he wasn't. Miss Ellie knew what Ray meant to Jock. Plus I got the feeling Ray had become a son to Miss Ellie in later seasons. I remember her introducing Ray to Clayton's sister Jessica as, "My son, Ray."
Yes, JR. The answer is yes. You were the love of my life!

    Oops. Thanks for catching that.
    Ok, here goes again...
2 billion barrels divided by 3 brothers equals approximately 667 MILLION barrels a piece. At approximately $100 a barrel, equals about $67 billion per brother. Now... that's Bill Gates rich.

Agreed...Gary would NEVER go against Miss Ellies wishes, and on top of that he has no great love for JR, who made sure he didnt settle back in at Southfork with all the crap he pulled on Val.

Does anyone know if Ted Shackleford has signed on with the new show at all?

That's because it was Ray's job to take care of the ranch. He got paid for that. Bobby and JR both cared about the ranch but their jobs were at Ewing Oil. That doesn't mean they didn't like Southfork. To the contrary, both JR and Bobby continued to live at Southfork even when they were wealthy adults who could have bought their own houses to have privacy.

Wasn't the last eight years of Knots part of Pam's dream?

Yes, this is what I mean. Ray was not her biological son but she treated him as such. This is why I am disappointed that Ray didn't inherit anything that has to do with the ranch.

I agree that Gary wasn't into being rich but he sure loved his ranch. So I think he'd do a lot to get it back.

That was a different reality. The Gary of this Dallas world where Bobby is alive could still be very wealthy.

I didn't think Ray had anything to do with it. And Val I am sure is very comfortable for two to live.

yes math is wrong but 2 billion barrels divided by 3 still makes JR a billionaire at today's price per barrel - now think about this. There is no mention in Miss Ellie's will about the mineral rights so it seems the court created this trust - with 3 trustees. That doesn't mean they are the only benefactors - if I was Ray, Lucas, Margaret, Lucy, Betsy, Little Bobby, Jason, Cally's son, John Ross, Christopher, - did miss anyone - I'm sure I did - I'd be out for my share of the money.

Too complicated - If they brought KL onto this show (and I think they should) they should just say they named Bobby after his uncle after they were worried about him living through a car accident - and that he lived through the car accident and leave it at that and move on.
