Default Dallas Has lost the old school

cowboy, western, tough , rough and a mans man that Jim Davis gave to Dallas. You could look at him and see somebody who could have worked in the oil fields, could handle a herd of cattle from horseback, and win any bar fight. Probably reminds alot of people of their grandfathers from years ago. My grandfather worked for channel oil company in Texas and La. in the 50's and 60's. I love the new dallas but Jim Davis gave an old school outdoor texas feel to dallas.

Times change simple as that. Men are punished these days for being manly.

Point taken, but Davis was there for the first 4 seasons in a 14 year run. The series survived and was still very strong for years afterwards. I don't think it's fair to compare the new Dallas to the years with Jock.

I much preferred Clayton as the family patriarch. Jock could be a real pig sometimes. Clayton was a nice, genuine guy who was tough when he needed to be (much like Miss Ellie).

To be honest, I don't recall any of my three grandfathers locking someone up solely for the sake of a deal and causing a suicide. Nor am I aware of them depriving their children of their mother's influence or getting their sons to pimp. But I might be wrong.

I know exactly what you mean. Jock gave that feeling to Dallas during his time on that show. He was the only member of that family that could knock JR off his perch anytime he wanted to,and he did several times. When Jim Davis passed away in 1981,Dallas kept being successful, yes, but it lost that element that Jock brought to that show.

I'm still going through the early years and Jock seemed to be the one that could keep J.R. boxed in a corner. Anybody else J.R. could grab that zip line and Batman escape his way out of everything. Ellie was too good-natured most times to keep him cornered, and Bobby wasn't around Jock enough to learn the tricks that J.R. knew. I think this last reason combined with the 'Bobby was given everything' is why Cidre and Co. have made Bobby seem so whiney at times through season 1 of the new show.

Jim Davis always used to refer to himself as the common mans John Wayne, meaning that if a movie called for John Wayne and he wanted too much money, they would get Jim Davis and he would have the same effect. Everyone from Larry Hagman to Patrick Duffy has said that Jim added that aspect to Dallas that was lost when he passed away. That aspect of "Daddy","Head of The Household","Head of The Family" etc.

Jock taught JR how to play dirty in the oil business, that's a fact. It's been said many times in the series by Bobby,Miss Ellie etc. But JR took what he learned a step or two further and did things Jock would never have done. Screwing over the Cartel with the Asian Oil Wells is one thing.

jock was not bove ruining a man's pubic and private life though, just because he was running for office and would cause his business trouble.

I miss Jock as well. Jim Davis was the perfect portrayl of what a tough and kind patriarch would be. Sure Jock made mistakes in the past, but he was always fair and he always strive to be the best. Jock was my favourite character on the show for many years.

John Ross certainly seems in that mold, if that's what you are looking for.

I liked Jim Davis, he was the head of the family, but he certainly was not the reason the show was a huge success. This wasn't Bonanza.

A softer generation than a few generations ago, that's for sure.

    The latte crowd.

Same can be said for today's female, compared to our Grandmothers.

But he made a significant contribution and the fact that his presence remained throughout the show - everything JR did he did to please Jock - confirms that.

Jock was an amazing character, however I think you are right, Clayton appeared to be much better suited to Miss Ellie. Whilst I was very sad to see the passing of Jim Davis, I felt that no-one else could have filled that void as well as Howard Keel. A fantastic actor.

In "Dallas:The Complete Ewing Saga" by Laura Wormer from 1985,I believe she had the best description of Jock & Clayton when compaired to each other.
She said that Clayton is from old money. He was raised into it. Jock,on the other hand, had to fight for all hat he got, starting at the bottom.
Ever since I read that years ago,I have always thought that was the best assessment of the two men.
Maybe that's why Jock was always quick to do whatever was necessary to protect what he had, while Clayton always tried to do things like Bobby;above board and on the straight and narrow.
Ellie could not have had two more different men in her life than Jock and Clayton.
