I'm typically not one for sharing family details on the forum, but I just learned that my 17-year-old dog Charlie has Diabetic Ketoacidosis.
His water intake and subsequent urination has sharply increased this summer, which I figured was due to his old age not taking well to the heat. Unfortunately, it's more serious.
I would hate to put him through long (not to mention costly) treatment for it not to work or for something else to go wrong. After all, he's approaching his 90s in dog years. Does anyone have experience with DKA or canine diabetes in general?

Sorry to hear it PTFG, Charlie looks so lovely.
I have actually never heard of Doggie Diabetes, but if its a long drawn out process, just think if it will benefit Charlie at his age, to have the treatment.
Do you not have a PDSA in the USA that could help with the cost of treatment if it will help him ?
I sincerely hope he's ok, and you too.

My cat had diabetes, she lived a long healthy life having 2 insulin injections everyday

Yes insulin injections. I'm more experienced with cats, but do you have this kind of food in the USA?:

Most important thing to remember is it IS manageable. I've worked with many diabetic animals. Try not to worry. And for what it's worth, 17 is a wonderful age, and from what I know, quite a 'normal' age for a health issue to rear it's head. Let me know if you need any help. He's beautiful
