Interesting, just goes to show how perfect the actual casting was. As great an actress as Tyne Daly is I think she would have much less fragile as Claudia. I would love to know more of the people almost cast. I knew John James wanted the Steven role. And that the Shapiros more or less created the role of Jeff just to add him to the cast as they liked him but found him wrong for Steven.

Great interview! I was given to read the pilot as it was written when George Peppard shot it and there was far less scenes than in the version we know. There is the list of the 7 scenes that were added when John Forsythe came in:
* Blake leaving the manor.
* Krystle's shower party.
* Blake and Andrew's talk at Denver Carrington.
* Walter visiting the worker who had been injuried.
* Matthew and Lindsay's talk about Krystle and Blake's wedding.
* Matthew and Claudia's talk in their bedroom.
* Jeff and Steven's talk in the living room.

The original pilot actually began with the scene with Matthew in the oil fields and not with Blake. It also ended with Matthew but that scene (Matthew and Walter naming their field) was not kept in the second version of the pilot. A picture of that scene can be found on GettyImage:

It seems that Matthew was more or less identified as the hero in that first version.

From the original main cast it's only Matthew and Fallon we don't know any alternatives for isn't it?
