Yay! Looks like this is the episode my first scene as an extra is in. I'm the valet in the red shirt running towards John Ross' car in the scene with Bum. It's about 20 minutes in and it's right after the scene with John Ross and Marta. Pretty fun to see that.

I spotted you, Chris! I am so jealous you got to be an extra. Are you going to be in any more scenes?

I am always way too late with my review, no-one wants to discuss it anymore.

I trust that by now the new characters can carry an episode. I am actually looking forward to less JR in this weeks episode, we just have to get used to the new characters, otherwise this will not work.

You misunderstand. The not inconsiderable task that confronted the producers was to update the show in a way that remained largely faithful to the original in terms of the mise en scene. My use of 'authentic' should not be misconstrued as hoping for something that was a clone of the 80s show. That was neither possible or desirable.

I have no problem with those who do not like the show. What did take me by surprise was how vehement and sometimes rude were the protestations from people who had decided well in advance that they were implacably opposed to it. This struck me as odd and I am now pleased that some are revising their rather harsh and precipitate judgements about the show.

All of that aside - episode 5 was very strong indeed. The characterisation is more plausible and I have an investment in the fate of some of the newbies - a turn of events that, frankly, has taken me by surprise.

And yet the things that people are now complaining about on the forum are things that the naysayers already mentioned before the show aired. Read the threads and the things people would change, the characters they would dump or bring in. It's the same as prior to the show. The naysayers may be more muted now because they're already said what others are now saying.

I thought the vocal naysayers were basically saying unless this show was about the Barnes vs Ewings it was a no go for them. Most criticism now sits with the fact that Sue Ellen is not used adequately and the lack of character development, mixed in with the odd criticism about the house. But as it progresses there appears to be a warming toward the new characters.

And that they should bring in Pamela Rebecca and Lucas and Margaret and the leave the house alone and why change things like the maid's name that don't need changing and don't rewrite history, and what are people complaining about after seeing the show - the new female characters, the house, Bobby's boring as heck, SE's not there, why is the maid butting into family business, Miss Ellie was committed, Jock and Ellie wouldn't allow drilling on SF, yet JR wants it so he can drill, JR3 hates his mother for putting him into boarding school when he was probably over 18 according to the previous timeline, even the lack of Ewing license plates. Some are more noteworthy critiques than others, but it's all the same argument.

Really? On the whole people seem to be enjoying the new series. I appreciate those concerns, like the license plates, I would get a a buzz out of them but they don't spoil my enjoyment of the series. They would be nice to haves and show an understanding of the fanbase, it's in the detail. I don't think they get that yet.

That's exactly the point. If you read people's reviews, they say they liked whichever episode, but what about this or that, this couple is boring, get rid of so and so, why did they change X, and most of said criticisms were things that were discussed prior to the show when the majority of people said "quit complaining, just be glad the show's back." So, they need to stop complaining now, it would seem.

I thought "I wonder who that is supposed to be?"

Only seen the Jock and Ellie painting off in the distance once, I think in the first episode.

The picture was found in a junk store, UD asked when on set, it's not anyone. I think it's in the set visit piece on the website.

Tessie, interesting comments. I must admit what you said really happened to me. At first I was all like "doh, the few bits they are re-writing do not bother me...okay Elena didn't really grow up on SF but who cares..." but then when I watched the pilot these things actually did bother me a lot.
I was like "oh shut up already, Elena never knew Pam" and seeing the maid felt kind of odd. And at first I didn't like the two girls at all but they are growing on me now. What doesn't bother me is the interiour of SF, I like it! The thing about section 4815162342 - I don't care at all what the number is...and I agree with JR that drilling on SF is a good idea under these circumstances..he wants Ewing Oil back on top so that is his chance. And gosh..who cares about Miss Ellie's wishes from a hundred years ago..I know this is not a very honorable attitude but I for one think that you don't need to keep such promises..Miss Ellie is dead ,so what. I know, not honorable but this is the way I feel.
