The placement of them in several rooms of the house is just so odd. I live in Washington State, but you won't find evergreen trees on my walls.

Well the show is going for the most common denominator. But the interior looks like a tourist designed museum of Texas instead of house in Texas.

Default Botched sets of "new" Dallas are quite bizarre

The bottom line is that Ms. Cynthia Cidre and her staff BOTCHED the Southfork interiors. There is no reason that any corner should have been cut in building new interior Southfork sets. But corners were obviously cut.

Building good sets should have begun with matching the number and placement of windows and doors to reflect the actual house. From there, if rooms were to be moved around from their original locations, at least the new locations would still plausibly fit into the actual house. Now we will be treated to a bizarre funhouse version of Southfork.

If Hollywood can recreate the entire West Wing of the White House with such detail on a soundstage, you would think the same level of detail could be accomplished in recreating a plausible Southfork interior.

I was watching Dallas tonight, the season Bobby was shot and have not really paid much attention to the set until this discussion but I thought under scrutiny it looked rather cheap. I like the cosyness of it but it looked like a set. The one thing about it I did like was that when you had a shot of characters sitting on the couch (in this case Pam and Ellie), it was great to see what was going on in the hallway and dining room. I think it added something to the feel f of the show. You got a feeling you knew what was going on in the house. In this particular scene you could see Rahoul laying the table and Bobby entering the hallway. With Pam in the lounge, it was kind of nice to see Bobby arrive before she did.

A smalll thing but it added a nice touch but it did look drab and dated. Silver and white wallpaper and horrible plants everywhere. But I do think the set reflected Miss Ellie, you had a real sense this was her house. When I saw her, I thought her much I will miss the dynamic she created.

I actually thought the Southfork interior looked its best during that season, and I liked the white and silver wallpaper. Go figure.

It may not be considered trendy today, but it had a cosy warmth to it that was obviously inspired by Miss Ellie. The pre-fire set looked cheap in places, but I certainly wouldn't say that about the set that replaced it. Also, I thought it was believable for Miss Ellie to have plants in the house. My mother has plants in her house as well even in these modern times. IMO, the new set looks far more bland because they made it so neutral looking.

My favorite SF interiors were in the 83/84, 84/85 seasons. The 85/86 season was okay too.

I'm ok with the new set, but I understand where you're coming from. The style you want (myself included) is called Georgian Colonial... more of the "Manor" look. They could have used the floor plan from the original Dallas and really went all out... more mansion-ish. I'm thinking massive entry with windows, hugh circular staircase, etc. Sizes of the rooms would have to be much, much larger. It would be more grand but not gaudy. I guess they opted for a more hip, neutral, open-floor plan theme. Not bad, but it would not have been my first choice.

Same here, although it started looking a bit cluttered during the 85/86 season.

To me large rooms wasn't what Dallas was about. I think the thing about Miss Ellie and Southfork, was that she wasn't grand. When I watched it yesterday I realized how small/normal it looked. But I think that was part of it's appeal. I recall Leonard Katzman saying that viewers could imagine themselves in the house, the dining table only seated 8. It wasn't a mansion, it was all very accessible.

I recall in Dynasty the first season, Blake, Steven and Fallon sitting eatting at this MASSIVE dining table. This wasn't portraying a loving family home, it was cold, it was for show, it was for entertaining business contacts and showing off.

The new set feels to me a modern version of the original intention

Default Me crying over spilled milk

I realize that the pilot and the 1st season have been completed and are waiting to be aired. I realize that my complaints about the "botched" sets are moot. At this point, there is nothing that could be done even if Cynthia Cidre called me up and said "Hey man, I agree with you. I did a horrible job in planning and executing the Southfork sets. How about you and me sit down over coffee so you can help me redesign new ones that would suit you!"

The main thing that disappoints me about the new Southfork sets is the incorrect alignment of the front door to the rear sliding-glass door that leads out onto the covered patio (where the family eats breakfast). I guess the benefit of fan forums is that we get to have a place to vent. And now I've done that. Just so you all know, I am greatly looking forward to the new show. And to agree with what "Gold Canyon" said in a post above, the new sets are "not bad, but they would not have been my first choice."

I wish Cidre and Company all the best.

The set was enlarged after the fire, and the slight increase in size was a welcome change. It was still humble and modest, but at least they were no longer living in such tight quarters. Also, I might have been more forgiving towards the new set designers if they had at least managed to have the new set make more sense architecturally. Unfortunately, they managed to botch that as well. The placement of the sliding glass doors leading to the breakfast terrace, for example, should have been behind the new dining room instead of straight back from the front door. That's where the fireplace and french doors should be, and it appears that part of the house wasn't even included in the new set.

I loved that they increased the size of the rooms after the fire... and that they continued to use the upstairs hallway. As for the sliding glass doors leading out to the patio, I know it might not make sense architecturally based on the original floor plan, but I absolutely love what they did in that move.

Yes, I do too. I just wish it had been placed in the right location.

That said, I do like that the front door finally has windows in it like it should.

I don't think the stars are representative of the lone star state. They are actually a fairly common folk art type accessory.

You must not shop in discount home goods stores! They are in tons of stores where I live, especially in the summer. Mostly red/white/blue so people feel patriotic around July 4th.
