Coronation Street prequel, July and August to Christmas 1957.

Right here is a Corrie prequel set in those two summer months in 1957, 3 and a half years before the show began and the prequel ends at Christmas 1957. It starts on a sweltering hot day in mid July 1957 in Coronation Street where there is a street party held down the street. We focus on Elsie Lappin at the Corner shop, Jack and Annie Walker at the Rovers, the Tatlocks, Gibsons, Hardman's and Tanners and Ena, Minnie and Martha and Len Fairclough. Ena is at the Glad Tidings Mission Hall. Linda Tanner is dating Polish soldier Ivan Cheveski and some future characters feature who were meant to have lived in Weatherfield way before they first appeared such as a young Blanche Hunt who has 2 year old daughter Deirdre and husband Donald. And on 19 August, young Jack Duckworth marries Vera Burton. Also we see an appearance from a young Fred Elliott of Nelson Street.

THE OPENING CREDITS ROLL, IT IS THE CREDITS WE SAW FROM 1960 TO ABOUT 1970.

EXT. MORNING, CORONATION STREET, MID JULY 1957.

There are tables and chairs laid across the street ready for the summer street party. Albert Tatlock is finishing laying the cutlery and Annie and Jack Walker are laying the crockery. Ken Barlow alights from No 3 with mum Ida.

IDA Ee it will be a run do this will be.
ALBERT I flamin well hope so Ida.
JACK Dont worry Mrs Barlow, it will be good. We not often have these street parties.
KEN Hot today isn't it?
ALBERT It is summer young Kenneth.
KEN I start uni in September. And I cannot wait.
Ena Sharples alights from the Glad Tidings Mission Hall opposite the Corner Shop.
ENA By gum what is all this?
ANNIE Mrs Sharples it is a street party.
ENA Aye well dont make too much commotion.
ANNIE Mrs Sharples you are getting rather obnoxious in your old age.
ENA Ah well not too much noise. I shall not be attending.
ALBERT What a loss.
ENA Dont get smart Albert Tatlock.
Ena walks across the cobbles from the Hall to the Corner Shop.

INT. CORNER SHOP.

Elsie Lappin is stacking a few shelves. Ena walks in.

ELSIE Morning Mrs Sharples.
ENA Morning Mrs Lappin. Can I have some eggs and flour please?
ELSIE Sure. Going to the street party?
ENA Nay lass.
ELSIE Only in summer does the sun shine on Coronation Street more.
ENA Yes due to that 4 floor raincoat factory on t'other side of street and the viaduct here at t'end of street. Folk from other streets say the sun never shines on Coronation Street.

EXT. STREET PARTY A FEW HOURS LATER.

All the residents of Coronation Street are sat having lunch and drinking and having a good time.

INT. GLAD TIDINGS MISSION HALL.

Ena Sharples, wearing her famous hairnet is sat at the table with Martha Longhurst and Minnie Caldwell.

ENA Wretched noise out there.
MINNIE Oh Ena, dont spoil everyone's fun.
ENA Why have a street party?
MARTHA My street where I grew up, Bessie Street always had parties every summer.
ENA I could imagine your one having it but I dont want Coronation Street to have one. Why not in Mawdesley Street?
MINNIE Come on Martha lets go and join them.
MARTHA Aye, we will see you later in the Rovers as usual Ena.
ENA Aye well dont drink too much beforehand.

EXT. CORONATION STREET.

Albert Tatlock is sat next to Blanche Hunt whose husband is sat the other side of her. She is holding 2 year old daughter Deirdre Hunt.
ALBERT growing up fast is Deirdre.
BLANCHE Aye, very fast. She'll be the height of the Eiffel Tower soon.
DONALD Blanche love dont go that far.
DEIRDRE Mummy what is a Tower?
BLANCHE A tall building love, you'll know when you get older. Although Ena Sharples is so old she makes Julius Caesar look young.
ALBERT Mrs Hunt please.
We see a young Fred Elliott from Nelson Street walking from Rosamund Street to Coronation Street with a plate of lamb chops ready to be cooked.
ANNIE Jack, there is that young butcher from Nelson Street.
JACK Oh yes so I see.
Fred places the plate on a empty part of the table near where Ken, David, Ida and Frank Barlow are sat.
FRED Nice lamb chops, I say nice lamb chops.
KEN Thanks Frederick.
FRED My pleasure.
FRANK Cant beat some meat (To Annie) Annie love, could you give these to the gentleman on the barbecue for him to cook please?
ANNIE Certainly.

INT, NO 11 CORONATION STREET, TANNERS MAIN ROOM.

Linda Tanner is stood at the dresser getting ready to meet Ivan. Elsie Tanner is sat in her armchair smoking.

ELSIE Not going to street party then Linda?
LINDA NO I am meeting Ivan again.
ELSIE Oh aye, him again.
LINDA Look mam I am seeing him, I love him.
ELSIE Do you think you will marry him?
LINDA Too far ahead to think.
ELSIE Seen your brother today?
LINDA no why?
ELSIE He set off for work early this morning.
LINDA Work, that will be the day for our Dennis. He has just left school.
ELSIE A year ago he left school. He has not done too bad.
LINDA Right I am off to see Ivan.
ELSIE Enjoy yourself love.
Linda exits. Elsie takes a huge puff of her cigarette.

1 MONTH LATER, AUGUST 1957,

INT, ROVERS RETURN MAIN BAR.

Billy Walker is stood chatting to Ken Barlow. Ena Sharples and Minnie Caldwell walk in.

ENA Usual please Mrs Walker. Stout.
ANNIE Certainly dear.
MINNIE Shame Martha cannot be here today.
ENA She is ill Minnie. Bad cold.
Annie serves Ena and Minnie their drinks. Ena pays.
ENA And listen here Minnie Caldwell my company is just as good as you being with both me and Mrs Longhurst.
MINNIE Yes.
KEN I start my studies next month.
BILLY Too snobbish for me the University is.
KEN You have to get ahead in life and I want to get ahead.
BILLY I plan to move to London in a few years and take it as it comes.
ANNIE William dear, university may suit you as well.
Billy grimaces.

We also feature in this 1957 fanfic the Oggies, I thought I would as they lived near Coronation Street itself before they appeared in 1964 so Stan and Hilda probably knew of some of the residents.

EXT, ROSAMUND STREET AT JUNCTION OF CORONATION STREET.

A 38 year old Stan Ogden is sat in his lorry smoking a fag. He is reasonably slender and has his trademark slicked back hair. Ena Sharples sees him from outside the Rovers and walks over.

ENA What you up to Stanley Ogden.
STAN On a break Ena, on a break.
ENA Get that lorry shifted as it is blocking some of the sunlight into the street.
STAN All in good time Mrs Sharples.
ENA Where is Hilda?
STAN Where she usually is during the school holidays, looking after Dudley, Freda, Tony and Sylvia. Fancy a fag?
ENA No thanks. Where you off to after this?
STAN Norwich in Norfolk. Long, long way, 200 miles or so. Some of the streets there remind me of the Salford back streets.
ENA Never been to Norfolk or even London.
STAN Anyway best be off Mrs Sharples, gotta earn some shillings.

INT, CORNER SHOP, CORONATION STREET.

Elsie Lappin is stood serving a customer. Albert Tatlock is buying some tins of food. The customer leaves.

ALBERT Ee this is a rum old price this is.
ELSIE Cheaper than the shop on Jubilee Terrace.
ALBERT There is that I suppose. Hear young Kenneth Barlow is starting university soon?
ELSIE I had heard Mr Tatlock.
ALBERT Frank and Ida will be pleased. And Linda Tanner may be marrying soon.
ELSIE Oh aye?
ALBERT She told me in confidence. She feels a lot for Ivan Cheveski. I'll have these please plus 3 eggs please?
ELSIE Very well. Her mother will not like it much.
ALBERT Linda is 18 nearly. Some people have been known to marry at 14 or 15.
