    Default Two classes of rich?

Were there two classes of "big-shots" in the 70s, with one being based not so much on education? Jock made his money without a college education as I suppose a lot of his fellow oil men buddies did. I remember once that someone mentioned meeting with someone and Jock said he never liked him because he was a Harvard man. Someone said Yale, and Jock said, "Same thing." I gather that Jock was pretty rough around the edges and not anyone important until he struck oil. I wonder how long it took him to fit in with the rich crowd? Even though he dined in fancy restaurants, he didn't seem like the type who worried about which fork to use with what dish. In another episode Lucy was studying a lot and JR said something like, "Well, if you want to be the first in the family to get your PhD, go right ahead." He said it in a sarcastic tone. J.R. didn't seem to know anything except the oil business. If he were listening to a doctor or therapist explain something, he usually didn't know beans about it. They were not impressed with Mitch going to college either. It seemed like they never rubbed shoulders with anyone who was snooty about their education. All anybody was concerned about was a business deal.

Was there probably a class of rich people who frowned on Jock and the rest of the Ewings?

It was mentioned that JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen all went to college, Lucy for a short time. (and Cliff as well). They looked down on Mitch because he was poor and worked as a parking attendant. The fact that he was studying to be a doctor didn't seem to mean much to them, especially since he wanted to do research.

Its like Dynasty vs Dallas. Two different classes of rich people.

Good Thread - Rich classes are the topic of how they were made Rich. OIL in the case of the Ewings in general, then goes the Oil Barons Ball. Just a thought

Jock was a true rags to riches story... A self-made millionaire.
As most people in the early years of the texas oil boom were.

Jock was new money and his grandchildren would be considered old money

The two kinds of rich people are the people who earned it and the people who inherited it who never would have been able to become rich without inheriting it.
