I got on Twitter in 2009, when it was blowing up all over the media. I thought it was silly, but mildly entertaining. Very mildly. I posted a few trivial little things, followed a few people I knew, but my last post was "God bless Michael Jackson" the day he died. About a year ago, I figured out the secret of Twitter, which is that it's all about who you follow. If you're following people who can't stay off the damn thing for more than ten minutes at a time, who post about what they've just eaten, or who are constantly replying to someone else's Twitter conversation (making their posts completely meaningless to you), then you've got to stop following them. I started following local (California Bay Area) sports media people (whose posts were sports-related), any Oakland Raider who was on Twitter, the president, a few comedians, even the Dalai Lama. (He doesn't say a whole lot; I guess it's all that meditating.)
Now I'm following about 100 or so various entities; I've got about eight followers, and I think probably five of them are porn-bots. My Twitter page reads like my own personal news-streaming service. I rarely post anything except notifications about my blog -- I send the notifications and links to all the sports figures and journalists, and to President Obama. I hardly think the president is reading my blog, but it's cool to think he might be.
My top Twitter moment came during the Super Bowl two weeks ago. After watching Bob Costas's pre-game interview with Madonna, I posted on Facebook, "You know Madonna has jumped the shark when you stop staring at her boobs because you can't take your eyes off her weird arms." (I was a social networking fiend on Super Bowl Sunday. I drank two pints of coffee, and combined with the euphoria of the anticipation of the event, I went on a binge, making maybe 20 posts between Facebook and Twitter.) Later on, I saw a Twitter post by Bill Romanowski (a retired football player who is now a big presence on local TV sports broadcasting) making reference to Madonna. I replied to his post by posting my Facebook joke. A few hours later, during the fourth quarter, I was notified via email that Romanowski had "re-tweeted" my joke -- and this guy's got about 26,000 followers! I was doing the dance of joy, even as the Giants were rallying over the despised (by me) Patriots for the win. And about 10 of "Romo's" other followers "re-tweeted" his "tweet," basically meaning my shit was going viral all across the country. That was pretty cool.
My Twitter handle is @gagavdh. But I don't post much, usually just pertaining to my blog.
