Do any of you remember how the quality of the first two episodes of season 8 looked when aired on SoapNet compared to the DVD release?

Order from Play or Sainsburys - but not Amazon - they sometimes take slipcases off shows and movies to save on postage costs

I think the reason why they kept the recaps is, that the episodes are really short! One episode only about 43 minutes and shorter.

Sadly that's a normal thing for the latter 80's, running time per episode was cut short more and more every year in order to squeeze more commercials into the hour.. but every other show was affected too, not only Dynasty. And keep in mind that there originally had been also "Next, on Dynasty"-clips at the end, which would add another 60 or 90 seconds to it.

I think 43 minutes is short for even the late '80s. It should be closer to 47 minutes.
Something's been cut.
If they made the Euorpean DVDs from original broadcast prints (which were dreadful, as I've gone on about before, in the late-'80s) then perhaps they used chopped up ones. Because 43 minutes is too short for that era.

No, the running time is correct. Don't forget - the total running time of one episode is including the LAST TIME ON DYNASTY segement. Thus, you get a bit more than 45 minutes per episode which was quite normal for an hour-long series in the late 80s. In the USA, the total running time per episodes would be around 47 minutes due to the slower NTSC. The late DALLAS seasons run around 45 minutes per episode in PAL including LAST ON DALLAS and NEXT ON DALLAS.

Those things were taken into consideration. If it's 43 minutes, something either been cut from the body of the show, or their voices are really high as if on helium.

How do you know this? If so, it's majorly sped up.

The Season Premiere "The Siege " ( Part 1 ) is 45-19 and all episodes range from 44-30 up to 45+ . Most episodes are 45 minutes + long.

Oh, I forgot about the PAL thingy, that's always 4% less runtime than US-NTSC-speed, and the voices are usually higher pitched compared to the original. There are exceptions though, where the labels sometimes correct the sound and i believe this has happened f.e. for some (sadly not all) of the Falcon Crest S1 episodes of the european set.

Season 8 episodes are really slightly shorter than in previous seasons. But it is standard for this time, I guess. For example episodes of Star Trek - The Next Generation in 1987/88 season have the same duration.

They weren't as short as 43 minutes yet, not by the late-'80s if run at correct speed. (STAR TREK:TNG was syndicated and they tended to be shorter than network programs).
I think this explains it:

Just thought I'd join the forums to post in this thread; been a lurker since Season 4 of Dynasty was released on DVD haha :P.
I've ordered Season 8 from Play.com, just waiting for them to process it now; I'm excited
. Although I'm not as excited as I could be, because of the comments I've heard about picture quality. Personally, I didn't mind the quality in Season 6 or 7; I still found it watchable - obviously the quality in Season 1-4 was perfect, and it would have been nice to have had all the DVDs to that standard. But from what I've heard, people say Season 8 is so bad, it's giving them headaches? And their eyes are hurting?! Seriously, are they worse than the soapnet copies? :|
Matt5: try zoverstocks on amazon
he sells things used, but they're in pretty good quality, and are quite cheap
I got Season 1 from him for just £3.99 and it arrived just like new, with a slipcase
