I've just finished Season 6. It was the dullest, silliest year so far. I almost gave up half way through. Though it takes an extraordinary turn towards the end.

Either way, no more compilation clips!

I much preferred season six over 5, though it was good to see Jonny Lee Miller.

Three quarters of the way through INSIDE MEN, the title of which (once you steer yourself away from the gay DVD implications) grows increasingly meaningful. The more layers of onion that get peeled away, the more fascinating and unpredictable these characters become, and the more cuff-chewingly tense the drama grows. The story is as skilfully executed as the heist it depicts (or perhaps even more so, as I've yet to see quite how that pans out).

That's all I ask from any TV show, shades of Sydney Bristow. Hell, I'd watch HOMES UNDER THE HAMMER if it offered shades of Sydney Bristow.

Hmm, interesting. As much as I feel the word "underrated" is a bit overrated as far internet forum cliches go, I think it might just apply to DEXTER. To me, it's the one high concept show ("He's a serial killer, but he only kills bad guys!") that actually transcends its concept. Take Dexter out of the equation, and you've still got enough juicy characters and story-lines for a really interesting, funny series. With him in it, it's just plain gripping. So far, that is.

He's so great. There's a righteous anger at the core of Elliot which never goes away. Ahh, PEYTON PLACE - you've got so much great stuff ahead of you!

James you may not have seen these eps yet as you say you didnt watch Easties for a while in the late 1990s but others will probably have seen them, and recently I was watching some episodes of Easties in 1999 when Lily Mattock got mugged by Gareth Wiley, who owed money to some people. He got a bit friendly with the vicar Alex Healey who was Mel's brother. When Alex said the church fund wouldn't lend the money Lily overheard and later in the Vic offered Gareth to fix her oven and help get ready for a party and she'd see him alright. He thought she would give him a few hundred quid so he could pay off his debt.
Gareth then did some work for them and Lily and Dot Cotton said they had something for him and Lily said "With our thanks and gratitude" when she handed him a bag full of cake, sandwiches, beer and fruit, Gareth was shocked as he thought they were going to give him some money. He then panicked and said "you said you knew what I needed" and when Dot offered him a tenner he threw the bag on the floor saying "well its no good to me", and the goodies went everywhere and Dot said "What manners" and told him to get out of the house and afterwards she said a comic line like "Hope he aint bruised the fruit". Later that night Lily was walking from the Minute Mart with a bag of beers and saw Gareth. She asked him if he was coming to the part and Gareth demanded the bag. Lily said "Typical a beer, well help yourself" Gareth asked for her handbag and when Lily refused he wrestled her saying if she gave it he wouldn't hurt her then she said she had trusted him before he pushed her down onto the floor leaving her writing in pain. Gareth then ran off and Terry shouted for someone to stop him and then looked after Lily. Gareth was later arrested and tried to hang himself in prison. Good storyline and shows how you can think you can trust someone then find out what they are really like.

Oh and I need to share thhis piece of vital information.
I had a dream about the new DALLAS show.
Southfork was still Southfork but.... so much time hhad passed that it was completely surrounded by latino ghetto projects and middle class knots landing housing.
Sue Ellen was this really bitter heavily made up woman, surrounded by all these Wire-esque characters who lived right outside the front gate. It turned out that over the years the EWings had sold off most of Southfork and it now resembled a sort of weird mix of apocolyptic doom and Knots Landing. Think NYPDBLUE meets KNOTS. There was bar right outside the back patio , frequented by latinos and ex cops. There was a whole who dunnit story as well and i couldnt work out who had done what because the plotting was so dense, everyone had a sceret and there were so many characters all surrounding Southfork. Think ZULU DAWN!
It was great.
I don't think the new show will be quite as colourful, so i just wanted to put my alternate version out there. In case, you know.....

I think the most interesting character in the show is Deb. She has that hard to love quality about her like Diana Fairgate but she is endlessly fascinating. It's hard not to be drawn in by a character that gets lines like...
“I couldn't give a fu*k about who you fu*k, just don’t fu*k with my investigation you fu*k!”
Given the concept & the fact that it follows a basic formula every Season, I don't think it's a show that should be going into its 7th year.

Got some more episodes of Emmerdale Used To Be A Farm on the way and bought the 2010 DVD package of 50 great Corrie characters over the 50 years. Well that puts Div and Minced Pork off the list then. The 1975-1976 eppies of Emmie I have chart the move from the old Woolpack to the current one and the final appearance of Andrew Burt as Jack.

I love how one week ENDERS can be all about the Badmoods (© Aunty Kim) and the next, completely change focus and be all about ... well, this week was about lots of things: Tanya and Max for a start - played by two actors who just work so incredibly well together. You can hear it in the rhythm of their dialogue - the way they bounce off each other, the changing pace, the little pauses - it's all so intuitive and intimate. Is there another current soap partnership that works so well? Offhand, I can't think of one. And I loved Derek's sibling jealousy as he watched Max and Jack hugging it out. Then there's Andrew and Heather's wedding hurtling brilliantly towards disaster -- Heather and Shirl's Mel & Kim dance routine, then Shirl getting pinned up against the wall by Andrew was ace. And that unexpectedly terrific scene between Ian and Ben, which all but acknowledged Ben has been played by two different actors.
The old ladies were all brilliantly showcased this week: Ann Mitchell growling her unique brand of menacing compassion at Max, Polly Perkins' long awaited WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? moment as she clambered into Heather's wedding dress, and Dot on fine and funny form throughout (her phone rant to the bank was one highlight).
A couple of lovely, near-silent moments: a lonely Shirl sitting in the gardens watching everyone else either snogging or pissing about in the street; a tense Max and Tanya similarly looking out at the Square on the morning of her scan.
I also caught up with "Phil on Remand", one of those ENDERS internet Red Button thingies, which had completely passed me by the week before and which attempted to do in under fifteen minutes what the "Den on Remand" soap-within-a-soap did over the course of almost a year back in 88/89. On its own simplistic terms, it worked. It was kind of nice to see Phil's long dormant noble side reawakened and there was something poignant (if not altogether un-ridiculous) about him calling someone who isn't played by Ross Kemp "bruv". It'd be interesting to see his young cell mate show up in ENDERS at some point, but as they've stopped even spinning off characters from E20 I don't hold out much hope.

Yes, I think it's important to do different drugs on each day of the week. (Actually, I've often day dreamed about doing drug-drugs in alphabetical order: A for acid, B for barbiturates, C for cocaine, etc.)

Oh man, nobody on TV swears like Deb! Imagine if that sarky woman cop investigating Cain's assault on EMMERDALE suddenly started talking like that.

Maybe it shouldn't, but I like that it is. You can tell that each season of DEXTER is based on a corresponding novel, and that each novel has its central plot which is neatly/shockingly resolved at the end of the last chapter, to make way for the next novel ... and that the continuation of the franchise depends on Dexter not being exposed. But even knowing that, it's probably the show that makes me gasp in shock more than any other. And while Dexter may indeed continue to avoid detection, each season nevertheless unpeels another layer of his character. Plus you've got all the supporting characters bubbling away in the background and the Special Guest Stars, all of whom have been fascinating thus far.

Yes I watched it last night to No 29. Dev must have had the shock of his life when he walked in and the shop exploded. And the fact he escaped with just cuts and bruises. I liked the one with Eddie Yeats. I hope in the countdown there are ones for Ena and Minnie and Hilda. Although Blanche should not have been an No 38 but about 4 or 5 as she was more the new Ena Sharples.

yeap your right emmerdalefan. blanche should have been in the top 5, watching those brilliant clips of maggie shows how much the show misses her, a one off, a sad loss, what a talent. i won't spoil who is where but there is a nice one for ena coming up, violet is one of my fav characters. i have really enjoyed watching this set. would have been nice if aunty had done something similar for ee. such a shame they have not released dvd sets. lets hope itv can do emmerdale justice for their 40th. a similar top 50 would be a fitting tribute, to the second longest running tv continuing drama, with sheila mercier being at number 1. i didnt realise that sheila is the elder sister of brian rix.

I think Emmerdale should replace Contrivedenders as the 2nd fave soap really after Corrie. Corrie and Emmie rock. Yes Blanche was so outspoken. I found it odd when Turkey Neck said that when David went on the rampage w3ith a pole that he frightened Blanche. Blanche, frightened? She was so acid tongued but then again even her and Ena would be scared if a 19 year old came at them with a pole.

Yes.
( incidentally, the producers say they reallly clicked with how to do the show during DNA MAD SCIENTIST, and from there they say they got it pretty much right. I think it's interesting to know because there is a difference in the tone of the eps before DNA , they were also filming in blocks until then and oonce they start focusing on each ep in the production schedule i think you can see the show come into focus)

I find it quite difficult to think of Ann Mitchell as an old lady. She's forever Dolly Rawlings in my mind and Ann has aged well so she still feels vibrant and vital.
You've just described perfectly what it is about Ann Mitchell that makes her unique as an actress. She does have a menacing quality which makes her quite scary but there's also a deep compassion which makes her tricky and fascinating as a performer. I thiink her performance as Dolly Rawlings in WIDOWS is astoniishing and extraordinary.
Be interesting to see if the writers can give her some interesting material on ENDERS. I'm going in for the Cora experience this week!

lets hope ann mitchell decides to stop in walford long term, she has already made a big impact on the show, i couldnt imagine albert square without her. it will be interesting to see what the writers come up with, the branning/cross family are ee saviour and hopefully will play a big part in shaping ee's future.

Ena Sharples and Hilda Ogden are probably the most recognisable Corrie characters ever. They are legends.

i think corrie will always be the nations favourite and held with effection, emmerdale is also held with effection, to a lesser extent )maybe its a northern thing.) ee has never been held with such effection and it isnt meant to. they are very different animals. however thats not to say ee cannot regain its crown at the top of the ratings again in the near future. i cannot see emmerdale moving in to second place anytime soon. that isnt a dig at emmerdale, for some reason it dosent get the hype and exposure ee's get. virtually every listing/soapy mag has ee on the front cover week in and week out. inside soap should be renamed inside ee. how often does emmerdale? corrie has more in recent times, but not to the extent of ee. like it or not for some reason ee sells mags. you only have to go onto forums (ds for eg) 80% of their threads are ee related. good or bad you know the catch phrase " ee everybodys talking about it." duff duff duff duff duff duff duff duff!!!!!!!!!!!

Watched the rest of the countdown. I am glad Ken Barlow is at the top but I disagree with some of the others. I expected Hilda to come second. If I compiled a list of 50 great Corrie characters I would put Ken, Hilda, Blanche, Ena and Stan at the top. The later followed by Rita, Len, Annie, Albert, Elsie, Fred Gee/Elliott, Emily, Deirdre, Alf, Elsie.
