Cliff Barnes unlocked the front door of his new house. He knew he would like living next door to Mac MacKenzie. They had meet when he studied law in NYC and had interned where Mac worked. When Mac offered him a chance to get away from Dallas and all the memories of Pam, he jumped at the chance. No more Ewings, and sunbathing beauties? Life couldn't get much better, he thought. A firm knocking on his door got him off the couch, a blonde woman was standing there, flanked by two small kids.
"Hi, I heard you were moving in from Karen Mackenzie, and I baked you a chocolate cake as a housewarmiong present."
Cliff let his eyes drift down her figure and then back up to her face. He noted the absence of a wedding ring gratefully. "Please come in and share my cake with me?"
She smiled warmly as the kids pleaded with her to say yes.
"I am Val Gibson, and these are my twins, Betsy and Bobby."
"I am Cliff Barnes." They shook hands briefly before sitting down.

"Where are you from, Cliff?"
"I am from Dallas Texas. My sister was burned badly in a car accident abouty 2 years ago and ran away. We were very close and I couldn't bear all the memories that city held for me. You see, I never cared overly much for her husband or her husband's family."
Val smiled. "My exhusband's family weren't nice people either, they drove him away and that is when we moved out here. There are only two members of his family I like, his brother and his mother. His other brother and his father are mean awful people."
The kids yawned loudly and Val looked at her watch. "My goodness, it is time for them to be in bed." She stood up and headed for the door. Cliff stopped her momentarily.
"Would you please show me around the area tomorrow? I would like to get to know you better." She returned his smile.
"It would be my pleasure."

Cliff arranged a few more pictures as he waited for Val to come over. He picked up the photo of him, Pam and Christopher and gazed wistfully at it. "I miss you so much. You kept me out of trouble.
He shouted at her to come in after he heard her knocking. "I was just arranging pictures of my family." He explained.
She gestured at the picture he still held in his hand. "May I see?"
She looked at it and her mouth dropped open in shock. "That is Pam."
"You know Pam?"

"Pam was my sister in law."
Cliff studied Val more closely. "You married Gary." It was a statement, not a question. "I know because I am the resident expert on the Ewings. Pam is my sister."
"It's a small world."
"Yeah, a small world all right." Cliff muttered morosely. "I move here to get away from the Ewings, and one of the first things I do, is start dating one."

"I am not a Ewing, me and Gary are divorced."
Cliff chckled humorlessly, "Been there, done that. No Ewing will let anybody get between them and their women. They are posseive to fanatical about them. I tried it with Sue Ellen and with Donna Krebbs."

"Gary is different, he can let go." Val tried to defend him.

"Yeah right, forgive me but I will believe it when I see it."

Val looked at Cliff for a long moment, then leaned forward and claimed his lips with her own, just as someone knocked on the door and it swung open, not having been closed properly earlier. Gary stood in the doorway.

Gary stared at them. Hurt and shock crossed his face. He cleared his thoart and then said "It's my afternoon with the kids. Mac told me that you had a new neighbor." Cliff stood up. "Gary, I am Cliff Barnes."
The two men studied each other. They felt the tension of the moment as they both knew they had alot in common but a lot of history stood between them. Gary finally spoke. "Why were you kissing Val?"
Val and Cliff exchanged a look, then Val defended herself. "I can kiss who I want Gary Ewing. We are divorced and you have no claim on me any more."

Gary turned on his heel and left. He didm't like the jealously that coursed through his body. He marched up the MacKenzies sidewalk again. "Cliff Barnes, I can't believe that Cliff Barnes is living in the cul-de-sac."
"KAREN" He bellowed as he banged their front door open. "How could you do it?"
Karen blinked in confusion. "Do what?"
"Rent Laura's house to Cliff Barnes."
"Cliff Barnes, Mac's old friend from Law school? What is wrong with it?"
"The better question is, what isn't wrong with it?"
"Gary, what are you talking about?"
"Renting a house to my family's enemy isn't bad enough, the first thing I know, he is trying to hone in on my wife and children."
"Val isn't your wife, and she would never take your children away from you. Besides he just moved in yesterday, you Know Val dosen't move fast."
"Care to explain why they were kissing then?"

Val knocked on Karen's door as a mere courtesy then opened it. She knew that Gary would head straight there and complain to Karen. "Gary, we need to talk."
"Later, I've got to collect my thoughts. Right now, I just want to take the kids out to watch Beauty and the Beast and lose myself in a mindless film." He walked the twins to the truck and after they were buckled in safely, zoomed off.
Val watched with a sad look on her face. She didn't want to hurt him, but she had her own life to live. Cliff joined Val in front of her house. She turned to face him, and tried to smile brightly. "Ready for the tour of the area?"
"Yes, let's go."
