Final Chapter part 3/3
The sight of Austin’s gun terrified me. “Oh my God, what are you doing?”
“Making sure we’re together forever, not you and your darling JR.”
“Austin, please don’t do this. Think about Chloe…she…she needs us!”
“You should have thought about that before you started f**** your boss.”
“Oh Austin, I’m sorry I hurt you. Please don’t, please,” I begged.
“You pushed me into this, Sue Ellen. I know I wasn’t a saint but I never loved anyone but you, and I thought you loved me. You lied to me!”
My voice slightly cracked when I said, “No, I did love you, Austin. If you’d treated me the way you’ve done so lately I’d never of reached out to JR. You don’t realize how difficult you were, and with Chloe being so dependent on us, I just about had a breakdown.”
“That’s no excuse, Sue Ellen.”
“I’m not making any excuses, Austin. I’m just telling you what led me to being with JR. He made me feel special and loved something you hadn’t done in so many years. I don’t know how else to say it to you. If falling in love is a crime, then go ahead and shoot me!”
“Don’t push me, Sue Ellen! I…I’m not ready yet.”
I realized at that moment that Austin was hesitant. Deep down I knew he still loved me and didn’t really want to pull that trigger.
“Austin, it wasn’t all bad. I loved you so much that I’d cry myself to sleep at night hoping you’d change. I would’ve done anything for you.”
Austin took my hand. “I did change,” he said.
“Yes, but it was too late even though my feelings for you re-emerged. I was stuck. What advice would you give a woman who was in love with two men? I was selfish. I didn’t want to lose either of you.”
“You told me you want JR, not me.”
“Given the choice, yes I’m sorry. If we hadn’t argued tonight, I would have continued to be selfish but for how long I don’t know. Now that it’s in the open my mind is clear. I couldn’t live without JR.”
“But you could without me,” Austin said, his eyes swelled up.
“Austin, you’re Chloe’s father. I’ll always be in your life because of our little girl. I do love you. How could I not? You’ve been a part of me for so long.”
To my relief, Austin put the gun down. “Not enough to choose me over JR though,” he said, his hands in his face.
I began to weep at the sight of what I’d done to him. Here was my husband…a man that did change only to have it blow up in his face. I scolded him for his flaws and told him how hurt I was when he had an affair. I told myself I deserved having two men in my life after what I’d endured. Poor me I’d always thought but it was more than being selfish. I was wrong and the biggest hypocrite around.
“Austin, I don’t know what else to say to you. Maybe I do deserve whatever you want to do to me.”
“Sue Ellen, I don’t want to hurt you. I can’t. I’m just a wreck,” Austin said.
I reached out to him and touched his face. He pulled me close and we hugged through our tears. We looked into each other’s eyes and I was about to kiss him one last time until the door flew open.
“Freeze, put your hands up!” a policeman said, his gun pointed at us. Austin didn’t try to fight. He did as he was told.
“Are you all right, Mrs. Owens?”
“Yes, yes I’m fine,” I said.
It’s by pure luck that Mr. Ewing’s son came home and called 9-1-1 when he thought there was a robbery and found his parents tied up.”
Just as I was about to ask about JR, he came through the door and held me close. I looked at Austin and felt bad. God only
“Get him out of here officers,” JR said.
“Wait, please!” I said. JR looked at me bewildered. “I’m so sorry, Austin. I didn’t want it to end like this.”
I held my breath for a brutal reply but he just smiled and said, “I love you, Sue Ellen,” and they took him away. I cried in JR’s arms.
“It’s going to be all right, Sue Ellen, I promise,” JR said, his comforting arms around me. I didn’t know what would happen to Austin or what Chloe’s future would be like but what I was certain of was this…that JR and I would be together for the rest of our lives.
One day, I’d shout it from the rooftops and tell all who’d listen.

Two years later
A ringing phone awakened a sleepy Sue Ellen. “Hello?”
“Is Sue Ellen Ewing there?”
“Yes this is she. Who’s calling?”
“I’m sorry to call you so early but this is Jessica Thompson from Thompson Publishing Group. I read your submission, My Love Story that you sent to us recently.”
“No problem. Thank you for calling me.”
“I always call when I’m interested in new talent. Your story was really good. I couldn’t put it down hence why I didn’t sleep all night,” Jessica said.
“Oh wow, really?”
“Yes, I’d like to publish it.
“Oh my God, thank you so much.”
“I should thank you because it’s really a juicy memoir. Our readers will love it but I have to change the title because it doesn’t do justice to it entirely. Of course you’re finally with the man you love but the title needs a bit more oomph!
“Fine, what do you suggest?”
“Well, you say it in your story and I think it’d be perfect.”
“I do? Ok tell me,” Sue Ellen said, excitedly.
“Pushing the Envelope.”
Sue Ellen smiled and said, “Damn, I never thought I’d say this but it sure paid to push the envelope.”
The End
