Actually the third season thing is just a rumor, they planned storylines for the next season but just that, as there was very little to say none of the possibilty of coming back. Second, I was pointing out a fact I remembered reading where they were interviewing the creators of that storyline, so I am sorry if I'm wrong then. But even if he did not do it, I don't think the idea was only conceived by Shapiro as it was a team of writers who developed the show

Yes it lacked originality but at the same time I think a certain similar structure and setting was inevitable.
The patriarch and his adult son and daughters all living together in the same big house - it was almost like a keystone for these melodramatic tv shows.
And was their on-and-off love life still interesting, or has it ever been interesting enough, to warrant a spin-off?
I think the most significant difference between Dynasty and The Colbys is that Dynasty started as The Krystle Show. They had Linda Evans.
The Colbys really didn't have someone like her - the newcomer, the underdog, someone to root or care for.
Watching The Colbys was like peeking through the window of Blake Carrington's neighbours.
And I for one have always been nosy enough!
Officially love this post
I've never seen the Colbys but I am SO hoping that it gets an R2 DVD release ideally when the related seasons of Dynasty are released *crosses fingers* : - )

I have to say I am in agreement with Olsen and DF it as too similar to Dynasty
But it was also bad-timing had they aired the Colbys alongside
Dynasty's season 3 when the show was still very good chance It would've stood a better chance, however I still felt that the characters were still similar
Blake and Alexis had 4 children, Jason had four children
Monica was a lawyer Adam was a Lawyer
I think a third season was planned as Diahann Carroll was set to join
The Colbys full time

why I love it! Like I said, I've only just started watching it but have known about it for a long time, but I too have wondered what would've happened had the show continued. I wouldn't necessarily call it a failure. 49 episodes is still pretty good (especially by today's standards of trigger happy network execs)!

Hi welcome to the forum may you have many happy postings on here

Yes 49 episodes across 2 seasons isn't bad considering it aired alongside Dynasty's worst years

If ABC had put The Colbys in slot after Dynasty they would probably make in top 30, and if PSM wanted to do The Colbys they would have had even better ratings.
Colbys really bombed in S2, probably because Dynasty also had huge breakdown in S7, although 48 episode of The Colbys was 28th (right after Dynasty).

airing right after "Dynasty" would have given them much better ratings and another season...

I think also Barbara Stanwyck and Ken Howard had both jumped ship too, that didn't help
I missed Connie in season2.
I persoanlly feel the Jeff/Fallon/Miles triangle just went on far too long and the Emma
Samms' Fallon was a big let down, not all Emma's fault though as Fallon got fiestier when
back on Dynasty.

The timeslot really was the biggest problem and starting the show 2 years earlier when Prime Time Soaps were still TVīs darling would have been better. Starting it in 1985 when all Prime Time Soaps went down in the ratings and comedy shows became the kings of TV was hard for the show to get its own fanbase and surviving on this timeslot was nearly impossible.

There were plans for a third season because Channing was supposed to have had a baby or twins and Bliss was dropped to reoccuring status as she was cast in Spellings Charlies Angels revamp that never materialized. I remember an interview with Sasha later of Highlander fame where he was bemoaning losing the Colbys gig because Bliss was dropped from regular to recurring status in season 3

A third season with a Sci-fi/Soap crossover would have been great. Aliens from the distant Moldavia Galaxy could have infiltrated Fallon's mind and sent her back to earth to take over Colby Enterprises. During the season she murders and maneuvers to deliver the corporation to the alien invaders and bumps off half the cast in the end-of-season cliffhanger.
In a joint tie-in there is a double cliffhanger on Dynasty as she also succeeds in securing Denver-Carrington from Blake, massacres half the Dynasty cast, and ends by sacrificing herself in the desert, as she waves in the alien spacecraft to take over America and the World.
