    Icon10 The Keys Of Marinus

has anyone bought this on dvd yet? it JUST came out this past January i believe. & i FINALLY got around to getting it this past week. i haven't watched it yet. buut it's one of my favorite early Doctor Who Serials cause it's really a Who Dunnit & i just LOVE those. plus a courtroom story i guess you can call it, as well

i also love those. & it's actually done a HELL OF A LOT Better than when "Dark Shadows" did it a few years later. watching the scenes on that show makes me cringe whenever i watch it. anyways

have you guys & gals bought this yet?

and THE INVASION! Don't forget THE INVASION! Mark Jones (Keeler in THE SEEDS OF DOOM) died recently. I liked seeing him mutating into a plant. Terry Nation said that nobody loved THE KEYS OF MARINUS (although I can't repeat what he actually said). He wrote it. Former Doctor Who script editor Donald Tosh (who unsuccessfully tried to get rid of William Hartnell & in 1960 persuaded Sidney Bernstein to commission something called Coronation Street [While working at Granada in 1960, he recommended that the broadcaster should commission a proposal from a young writer called Tony Warren. Donald says, "I was ploughing through these submissions when I came across Tony's. I wrote a long and detailed memo to Sidney Bernstein [Granada's co-founder] telling him he should commission this one because it was set in Manchester, which was Granada's spiritual home, and it followed all the right rules for a soap opera that kept its audience."

Tony Warren's proposal was for a series that, later that year, would become known as Coronation Street. "I'll never forget Sidney's response," says Donald, chuckling. "He wrote back to me and said, 'I will take a lot of convincing that anybody is going to be interested in a lot of boring people in living in a back street in Manchester.' " ...but Sidney Bernstein ultimately decided to take a chance on it.

"I watched the first episode," says Donald nonchalantly, "but I don't think I've seen more than two or three since. It's not my cup of tea."] & thinks that Patrick Troughton was the best actor to play the Doctor and that Tom Baker didn't work...Hey I like this guy!) tells tales of Terry Nation delivering an envelope of six Doctor Who episodes (Terry's half of THE DALEKS' MASTER PLAN) in 1965 and rushing off to Heathrow (and off to America for weeks, incommunicado), only for Donald to open it and find that Terry had only done 26 sheets of A4 story outline, on one side only and not even complete pages....which were Terry's 6 episodes.....delivered ten days before shooting commenced....

Surely you're not convinced by the Yartek disguised as Arbitan sequence?

What this about "guys and gals"....Do not evoke memories of Jim'll Fix It...especially not "A Fix With Sontarans" with the unnamed Doctor, Gareth Jenkins.

Terry was a rather "variable" writer. Besides, he spent lots of time over at ITC on THE SAINT, THE BARON (also script editor), THE CHAMPIONS, DEPARTMENT S, THE PERSUADERS (also script editor) and THE PROTECTORS...and non ITC, he script edited the final two-thirds of the Linda Thorson's episodes of THE AVENGERS and wrote five weak episodes for it.

    Terry Nation versatility!

Terry did that sort of thing on THE BARON more than once and again on THE PERSUADERS....and THE CHAMPIONS...and a few times on DOCTOR WHO....and on BLAKES7.

Well, I've got all the box set episodes of the above shows and I feel that I should have had some sort of price refund!

On Doctor Who, we got Genesis of the Daleks after Barry Letts pointed out that Terry had previously submitted a storyline that he'd done three times before.

Sometimes, he'd take an episode of THE SAINT and take the finale of another episode of THE SAINT and hey presto, a brand new episode of THE BARON! Roger Moore would get story lines on THE PERSUADERS that he'd been given on THE SAINT two years before. Some of his BLAKES7 stuff was from episodes of THE SAINT. He turned THE SAINT episode The Inescapable Word into THE AVENGERS episode Thingumajig and the BLAKES7 episode Mission To Destiny. One of his SAINT episodes was called "Where The Money Is". That figures.

Oh, he used to pinch and copy (sorry...do a pastiche) from/on films (Hi San Demetrio London!...High Noon, the Maltese Falcon, Kind Hearts and Coronets) and recycle ideas.. On both THE BARON and THE AVENGERS, the producers thought he was submitting poor scripts. Which he was....and he was the script editor.

    New material?

    (J. R.'s Piece scuttles outside, where it laughs uproariously until it's sides ache, and it whips out it's little SKYDIVER and plays with it. After several minutes have elapsed, it scuttles back in again, still stifling the occasional chortle)

Brian Clemens hired a lawyer to sue Terry Nation after Terry's format for the television show, Survivors, seemed to be based on Brian Clemens' idea and format for a possible television show called Survivors.

It's nice that they got George Coulouris in The Keys of Marinus. He worked with Orson Welles and ....so did the Muppets.

DWM did a strip where the Voord became the Cybermen. An elderly Jamie got bumped off in that story.

Then you're in luck about Jamie. He's been appearing in lots of Big Finish stuff recently.
