Following Michael Jackson's sudden death on June 25, Kanye West claims he will become the next King of Pop, replacing the late singer. "You know everyone loves and respects Michael but times change. It's so sad to see Michael gone but it makes a path for a new King of Pop and I'm willing to take that on," so he told Scrape TV.

On what makes him deserve the title, Kanye said, "There's nobody who can match me in sales and in respect so it only makes sense for me to take over Michael's crown and become the new King." The rapper then added, "First there was Elvis [Presley], then there was Michael, now in the 21st century it's Kanye's time to rule. I have nothing but respect for Michael but someone needs to pick up where he left off and there's nobody better than me to do that. I am the new King of Pop."

Furthermore, Kanye reportedly has reached out to the Jackson family to obtain official permission to use the title but so far received no response from them. It is believed that the family is still mourning over Michael's death.

"King of Pop" was a honorific title popularized by Elizabeth Taylor when she presented Michael Jackson with Artist of the Decade prize around 1989. At that time, the British-American actress proclaimed Michael, who has sold million copies of records, as "the true king of pop, rock and soul."

Kanye has a lot of self-proclaimed titles, none of which he actually deserves. I just loved that moment at the Grammy's one year when Vince Gill said "I just had an award given to me by a Beatle. You ever have that happen to you, Kanye?" LOL, nice to see somebody take Kanye's ego down a notch!

I remember that. A big pet peeve of mine are people who aren't down to earth, and Kanye certainly isn't. He also lost to Gretchen Wilson for best new artist (I think that's what it was), and went off about how much better he was and even called Wilson's music "bullshit." Just goes to show what a little prick he really is.

It's funny because me and a friend were actually trying to think of who is the closest person we have to a new KoP. Justin Timberlake and Usher were the only two we could come up with - and we gave them the title Dukes of Pop, as they're obviously nowhere near King status yet. Kanye's name didn't come up in our conversation.

And although I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool fan, I actually think Kanye is pretty good. His hyperbolic "look at me" commentary in the press notwithstanding.

If you look at Gaga's career next to Gwen Stefani's career, there's a lot of similarities. And I think the biggest similarity is that Gaga's going to also suffer from a sophomore slump and fade away. Maybe she'll go back to smaller gigs like Gwen did with No Doubt. But I don't see Gaga as going far enough for long enough to be called the Queen of Pop.

to be the "king" or the "Queen" you have to transcend several generations and even genres..
lady ga ga has had a few hits, that's it... Kanye is the same..

neither appeal to multiple generations the way jackson did... neither have been around long enough to be tested...

Britney is ahead of them for royalty status in the pop world.. because at least she's been round for a while and we've watched her 'grow up'.
