Matt Cantrell & the Emerald Chase? Good or Bad Storyline?

I understand the writers were trying to go for suspense to keep viewers after Bobby's death but I really couldn't get into the whole Matt Cantrell storyline with the emerald mine, JR backing him to trick Pam, the jungle theme, etc.

Did you love it or hate it??? Why?

Not one of s8 finest plots, but not the worst either! that honour goes to Miss Nero, Grace and co! and the hat pin!

Boring storyline, there was too much of those foreign trips in the second half of the season.

I really hated this storyline, almost as much as the Angelica storyline. It was corny and unbelievable. Pam neglected her work, Cliff, Mark and even Christopher spending her time obsessing with emeralds because it was "Bobby's dream." I thought it was very selfish on her part, and it seems like she'd be smart enough to do more research before jumping into business with Cantrell (like maybe call up Taylor "Guzzler" Bennet or some of Bobby's old friends and ask if they ever heard Bobby talk about emerald mines).

Even so, if I was married to someone that long, and was later told they had a dream that I knew nothing about, I don't see how fulfilling that "dream" after the person was dead was even relevant. Its not like Bobby asked her with her dying breath "Call...Matt..Can..trel...must...find...emeralds.." or anything like that?

I didn't get my S9 DVDs yet, but when I do I plan to fast-forward over much of this storyline.

The only good thing in its favour (re the Matt Cantrell storyline) was that it was better than Angelica Nero and her goons.

But you know what? They actually handled it well, and Marc Singer was a big star at the time. When Matt Cantrell walks right back into JR's office and blackmails him....to me, that's the major payoff right there. That made it all worth it for me.

Not my favorite storyline by any means...it was difficult to watch Marc Singer on 'DALLAS,' after watching him on the series, 'V.' I always wondered when he'd flash that alien tongue and one of the female characters would wind up preggers with his spawn!

I had a big problem with this storyline. First of all, and correct me if I am wrong, but I don't recall Matt Cantrell even being mentioned before this stupid storyline. I don't recall Bobby having any kind of interest in emeralds, so where did this foolishness come from? Just a poor storyline altogether.

I thought it was very boring, it was so obvious that Victoria wasn't hiking up the mountainside herself. The only part I enjoyed was the corrupt sheriff. He was entertaining.

This storyline was lame for several reasons:

1) It took Pam out of Ewing Oil, and away from any big payoff from Pam/JR friction at
the office. Pam at Ewing Oil had the opportunity to be one of the all-time great Dallas plots, and it was a huge missed opportunity -- perhaps the biggest missed opportunity of the series.

2) A strange guy with no roots in the series suddenly appears, and dominates one of the central plots. By this season, hasn't Pam been a Ewing long enough to have wised up to family and friends coming out of the woodwork to ask the Ewings for money? It was just a silly premise.

3) Pam returns from the jungles of Colombia with a new face, and it is jarring. Pam never looked like Pam again, and it is too bad because she was looking incredible before the leaving for the mine.

The storyline is so obviously created to allow Pam to be absent for a few episodes. I acctually felt sorry for Cliff (and Ken Kercheval), having to be in the same scenes as Cantrell and Graison and their fighting. Horrible characters. I'm starting to feel happy it is all a dream...

I hated the story. That and the trips to martinique ruined what could have been the best Season for me. I thought the 1985-86 Season was fantastic but it would have been so much better if they ditched those stories which took us out of Dallas and moved away from what the show was about. Now you mention this story I realise how much it annoys me and the damage it and the awful Martinique thing did.

Noone ever heard of Cantrell before, why bring it up and insult the Dallas audience? The story made no sense and was probably made to kill time, but instead it was wasted time.
Yes, it should have been Guzzler, at least we knew him from before. But Guzzler was dead.
