Default The Absolute Worst of the Worst...

Okay, fess up y'all and tell us what you think the absolute WORST Doctor Who story ever is...?

    I can't stand:

    Enlightenment
    Vengeance on Varos
    The Space Museum
    Planet of Evil
    Colony in Space
    The Masque of Mandragora
    The Face of Evil
    Meglos
    The Leisure Hive
    Ghost Light

    And from the new series...
    The Long Game
    The Shakesppear Code

    I don't easily warm to:

    The Time Monster
    The Mutants
    The Claws of Axos
    Time Flight
    Planet of the Daleks
    The Krotons
    The Dominators
    Logopolis
    Castrovalva
    Death to the Daleks
    The Keys of Marinus
    The Space Pirates
    The Sensorites
    Timelash
    Time and the Rani
    The Space Museum
    Colony in Space
    Meglos
    The Leisure Hive
    The Invisible Enemy
    The Armageddon Factor
    Destiny of the Daleks
    The Invasion of Time
    Terminus
    Arc of Infinity
    The Twin Dilemma
    Revenge of the Cybermen
    Galaxy 4

    And from the new series...
    The Long Game
    New Earth

    Stories I'm ambivalent to:
    The Myth Makers
    The Gunfighters
    The Rescue
    The Horns of Nimon
    The Creature From the Pit
    Day of the Daleks
    Nightmare of Eden
    Vengeance on Varos
    The Power of Kroll
    The Stones of Blood
    Attack of the Cybermen
    Resurrection of the Daleks
    Revelation of the Daleks
    'Season 23'

Laura: That guy came here last night and told you your father is dying. Now, no matter how much you hate him, he is your father and he is dying.
Sumner: And not a moment too soon.
Laura: You know, I almost feel sorry for the old man.
    Sumner: You didn't know him.
Laura: All he wanted was for you to love him. Is that so terrible?
    Sumner: Yes.

Funny but these episodes would appear in my top 20 favourite stories.

Maybe you don't like the period piece episodes, which for me, Doctor Who does so well.

Actually Garry, I think you might have a point, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out, although I am a fan of the serials set in the past with nothing but historical content - Marco Polo is great

Yes, the soundtrack to Marco Polo is excellent. Shame about the lack of pictures.

Mark Eden (Marco Polo), Derren Nesbitt (Tegana) and Martin Miller (Kublai Khan) were all in the same episode of The Prisoner, 'It's Your Funeral', in 1967.

As for the historicals, Doctor Who is often at it's best when it's being something else....if you see what I mean.

Apparently Patrick Troughton kept laughing at them, whilst on location and Frazer Hines has mentioned this as being his least favourite story, calling it 'The Croutons'.

Erato has his strong point. I read an interview with Geoffrey Bayldon where he said his first thought upon seeing Erato was, "My, that is a big one!"

Wasn't it great when one of the Voord disguised itself as Arbitan? The old hidden face trick.

It's weird to have four hours' worth of 'The War Games' pulled for a clip of less than twenty seconds. Hope you see it, the others and finish your nightmare soon.

Fraxer Hines (Jamie from 1966-69) made a couple of records based on the show. That's the worst Doctor Who story I can ever think of.

The only story I can't stick in my VCR, and have a jolly good Who watching time is UNDERWORLD.
It's boring, badly made, crappily acted, anger-inducing and just an overall complete pile of tosh... give me Tetraps, Green Illuminous Phallises, tinsel-Timelashes and a 14 part Trial over it any bloody day.

Wow, you people know your WHO. I know next to nothing of the McCoy and Colin Baker years, so I guess I'd have to pick "Lazarus" from the latest series which was very disappointing--lazy and dull in an EASTENDERS sort of way. And "The Pirate Planet" from "The Key To Time" drags on a bit.

"Underworld": What era is that one from? Is it about a factory in Manchester that makes evil knickers by any chance?
"Anyone who reacts critically to a show in a written-down form, whether it's professionally or in a blog, is responding to the programme in a perfectly valid way, but in an utterly atypical way. That's just not how people watch television." - Steven Moffat

"Underworld" is mooted as being Tom Baker's worst story

... though Tom's worst are better than others best IMHO

Nah, The Lazarus Experiment was pretty entertaining, unlike 42, which was just a Doctor Who by numbers episode. Evolution Of The Daleks was the biggest disappointment for me this series. Such a let down after an interesting build up.

'The quest is the quest'....didn't Imogen Bickford-Smith (from Underworld)'s agent try to suggest that she might be replacing Louise Jameson?

    "Whatever blows can be sucked!"

Some actors can raise the quality of a weakly-realised story by putting in a good performance. Patrick Troughton gives a wonderful performance in 'The Krotons'....a story that isn't very good.

Peter Cushing is another example....even in his lesser films, he brings quality to the production.

Come to think, both Troughton and Cushing were part of Laurence Olivier's acting company.

If Doctor Who script editor, Dennis Spooner and actor Patrick Troughton could both do stints on Coronation Street, why not?

Underworld is the penultimate story (penultimate Leela story, too) of Season 15, Season 16 is the 'Key to Time' season.

I've now decided that the song, 'I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek' is the worst of the worst, too....what with it's Dalek declaring, "I love you!"

I found Bob Baker & Dave Martin (recently deceased) Doctor Who stories hard to take...(eg. Claws of Axos, The Invisible Enemy) ...It was like they had a jumble of ideas, which could never be properly realised with the facilities.

I wasn't too sure about the Tom Baker story, 'Shada'.....but as it was unfinished, it's not really that fair to comment on it, I suppose.

Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures writer, Gareth Roberts, used to be a storyliner for Coronation Street and named the knicker factory after the story title.

I was willing to accept just about anything in the classic Who episodes simply because the lousy effects and tight budget were parts of its charm. Even if the story was rather...thin I typically found something to like in it--usually a Doc/Companion scene, or an unintentionally funny villain who was over the top. I guess my expectations were a lot lower.

In this current version, I disliked "Fear Her," mostly because of the un-needed sentimental crap about the Olympic torch being love (or some such nonsense), and that first "Doctor-less" episode with the guy talking into his video camera (I'm blanking on the title--shows how much I want to forget) was just dreadful. Other than that, I'm really liking the new version, especially the Martha stories.
