Wimbledon Agrees to Equal Prize Money
Women Players Will Receive as Much as Men

WIMBLEDON, England (Feb. 22) - After years of holding out against equal prize money, Wimbledon bowed to public pressure Thursday and agreed to pay women players as much as the men at the world's most prestigious tennis tournament.


I don't see this as a black white issue. Men play the best of 5 sets while the women play the best of 3. The length of the match dictates the amount of televised time and thus the amount of commercial space to sell.

mind you, the disparity in winnings last year was only about 50k less for the femal champ than the male. so it may just be a matter of good relations as they were practically making the same already.

i think men should get more as they play 5 sets to womans 3! plus the fact mens tennis is far more intersting!! i am a big tennis fan but ladies tennis kinda bores me!

I'm the opposite. Ladies tennis is a much better game in my opinion. Rallies are much longer and there seems to be much more action as in mens tennis is basically a return or two then someone slams the ball into oblivion.

Ladies tennis is a much bigger draw then men's. Wimbledon, as well as the other Majors, get most of their non diehard viewers during ladies matches, it's only fair that they earn their cut.
