Did they ever use the living room after season 2 or 3?
I remember one beautiful scene with Krystle and Alexis, it was shot from a distance and it even sounded like a very big room.
It seemed to me that after a while everything just happened in the hallway.
Meetings and bitchy greetings, weddings and parties. Such a big house and they only used the staircase?

They did use the living room later, but, later the master shots almost seemed non-existent. Funny to have so many cramped-looking scenes in a mansion set so large.

Turns out that a sunroom/conservatory is different from a solarium --- a solarium has a glass roof and is mainly for warmth; a sunroom does not have a glass roof and exists to allow inhabitants to enjoy the exterior view, and a conservatory is a sunroom which may or may not have musical instruments.

Please permit me to go off on a tangent:

The staircase should never have been moved and it should have not been reversed from the original staircase at Filoli. The dining room should have been at the front of the house on the opposite side of the foyer from the living room - this way the kitchen would be in the same approximate location it is at Filoli. The dining room set would function as the "everyday dining room" and if they shot on location (which they should have) the dining room at Filoli would be the "banquet hall" reserved for special occasions. The conservatory would be beside the library and opposite the staricase. There wouldn't be french doors beside the fireplace (the arched bookcases would be there), these would be on the opposite wall at either end of the long sofa. These french doors could be those that lead to the side porch at Arden Villa if they had to film there. There is a room at Filoli between the staicase hall and the ballroom which is painted the same green as the ballroom, the solarium could be a substitute for this room (with a door at the end which supposedly led into the ballroom) but there should be multiple french doors on each side wall (not one set on each wall) and the set should have been lit to appear as if there was a skylight. Blake and Krystle should have had their own separate bathrooms and dressing rooms at either end of the master bedroom. Blake's dressing room would have dark paneling (similar to the dressing room in "Heaven Can Wait"), Krystle's dressing room would be all mirrors and retro Hollywood glamour (Alexis would have made certain her boytoy Roger gave her a posh dressing room).

The pervasive white walls that seemed to increase throughout the show's run would have made sense at the beginning of the series: Alexis would have decorated the house in the early sixties and over the years Blake would have had rooms repainted and furniture reupholstered - his choices would have been conservative. Once Krystle became the lady of the house and began to feel comfortable in that role there should have been more color - Krystle would have had the rooms redecorated to reflect her taste (what else was there for her to do with her time).

The mansion should have had a Avery; Richard Avery could have moved to Denver after leaving Knots Landing and Blake could have kept him at the masion as convenient legal counsel once Andrew Laird evaporated.

Like I've said before, I think when they created the center grand foyer/staircase, they should've left the smaller, original one down the hall as a secondary way to get upstairs in that huge house. Andd they shouldn't have done away with the reception room, altogether, but simply moved it further down the hall, so that it'd sit to the left of the foyer. That room was too divine to just do away with. I'd leave it kind of "open" to the corridor on that side of the house... meaning it'd be the only formal room on the main floor - or the only room, really, without doors/double-doors -- hence, it'd still feel "reception-like."

If there was an S&M dungeon at the Carrington mansion I imagine Joseph wasn't on the receiving end of the discipline - he was the one administering it. Joseph wasn't only Blake's major domo, her was also his Major Dom. Once a week Blake and Joseph would meet in a secret room at the mansion. Joseph would be wearing a Muir cap, leather uniform shirt, leather breeches and highly polished knee-high boots. Joseph would cleanse Blake of his impure thoughts.

    Yes, totally.

I think the anteroom rotunda needed to be snazzier, as well. Purple marble, anybody? An elaborate wall mural lit by those giant sconces by the door?

Marky, someone once posted (either here or at IMDB) a breakdown or timeline of the mansion sets over the seasons. Do you have that? Can you post it?

We never saw it but I have a very clear picture in my head of Joseph's bedroom. It's only about 12' x 12' with a high ceiling. There is a single window which overlooks the side courtyard and the carriage house. On one wall is the door to the hallway, beside the door is Joseph's bed, it's a single Jenny Lind style with an ivory cotton chenille spread. At the foot of the bed is a neatly folded multi-color afghan. Next to the bed is a very small nightstand with a single drawer and a shelf beneath that with old hardbound books on it. Atop the nightstand is a small lamp and a "Baby Ben" alarm clock set to go off at 5 a.m. Opposite the window is a tall, narrow dresser. On the wall above the dresser is an antique oval mirror which has lost some of its silverleaf. In a corner between the window and the door to the bathroom is an old clubchair which is upholstered in dark brocade. On one side of the chair is a swan-neck floor lamp and on the other side of the chair is a small table with a book, a neatly folded copy of today's paper and Joseph's reading glasses. On the other side of the bathroom door is a small writing desk with small compartments across the back which are filled with stationery. The walls of the room are antique white and the floor is dark hardwood tongue and groove (as opposed to the more elaborate herringbone and Versailles parquet floors of the main house). There is an old, slightly worn Turkish rug in shades of deep red, tan and indigo. The one wall without any doors or windows (where the dresser is centered) is completely covered with magazine and newspaper photos of Alexis - with the eys cut out.
