in the later years you are now watching (lucky devils!!) she had melted into this warm, very alive, sensual and screwed woman but during the first years I found Sue Ellen rather a frigid, distant woman. She seemed as cold as ice, her affair with Cliff a cool calculated vengance than something sexual, then a hot cowboy named Dusty came along......

Deep down she had all those feelings and female needs but she put up this huge wall to protect herself turning into this distant and icy figure.

But when she melted, oh boy, this was one fascinating woman capable of much more than she thought..

I never saw her as frigid, she was always begging JR to sleep with her in the first season- in fact, at the end of the first season- she says that she can't cope with a "man not in her bed"- I was like, oh, god, she's only been in the sanitarium a week- she's a nympho- she even did with Ray- I didn't see her as frigid, it's JR who would not do it-

I agree with you! In the first season, in the beginning she seems a little cold, but at the same time she is not completely heartless. You can see she does have emotions especially when she was begging JR and pleading "why won't you make love to me anymore?" in one of the first episodes and all the way to Winds of Vengeance. In the beginning she was a soft-spoken, and very vulnerable woman who couldn't accept the fact that her husband wasn't being faithful to her because she loved him so much. I think to cope with that she wrapped herself up in the DOA, the Ewing money, and being the perfect lady. But she really sheds her sensitive side when she's in the sanitarium, telling Bobby how much she loves JR but that it's hopeless because he didn't love her back. Later on, after she meets Dusty she starts to become stronger over the years, and become her own person. I think the birth of her son also brought out that good side to her that she had kept well-hidden for so long.

    Just my two cents.

I wouldn't characterize SE as an ice queen--but she certainly had the abilty to wear that mask well when she wanted too.

Suellen is not an ice queen she is just trying to survive in the land of Ewings and with JR as King. What could you expect?

I agree that Sue Ellen was very cold the first few years and very hateful. Check out the way she spoke to Lucy and Pam in the "Survival" episode or the lunch conversation she had with Pam in "Act of Love", where she is extremely brittle and high-strung because Pam unknowingly caused her to miss a tryst with Cliff. I did not care for her the first few seasons. To be fair, she could be sympathetic at times like when she was forced to sing in her bathing suit in "Winds of Vengeance" or the early episode where she begs JR to sleep with her. However, most of the time she was a self-absorbed, money-hungry bitch. There is no excuse for how she treated Pam the first few years. Pam did nothing to her, yet Sue Ellen treated her like garbage. Yes, Sue Ellen was definitely the ice queen of Dallas!

Well with a social climber like Patricia for a mother and a backstabber for a sister like Kristin, who wouldn't be cold?

In my opinion the true Ice Queen had to be Marilee. The woman insulted every woman she met and slept with any man who looked her way!

If Sue Ellen is the Ice Queen, then Jeremy Wendell should qualify as the ICE King.

hehehe Beth..... i was surprised as heck to see Jeremy Wendell even say "Happy Birthday" to Sue Ellen's assistant in that one scene.

It sounded like it hurt his mouth saying it! LOL

Humanity is completely foreign to Jeremy.

Yeah... at least JR even though he can be a bastard at times, shows some humanity from time to time... especially during scenes with his son..

Is it any bloody wonder?! It took her first affair to bring on her "awakening" - which brought out her true passionate feelings.

"Was" Top Jimmy. But only for a while. She doesn't qualify for anywhere near that title in later years. Marilee Stone is an Ice Queen. YUCK

In the early years, Sue Ellen was what she was groomed to be and being that woman, caught up in "money, property and prestige" is a recipe for disaster. When she finally found her way to the treatment center she really accepted her alcoholism, and then appeared the "club soda with lime please" (my usual "cocktail" when i personally go to bars its really tasty.) She began to see and ACCEPT JR for what he was, and let herself be her own woman, not just JR's wife and to not tie her self-esteem and self-worth to her husband, she found her own internal well spring and no longer needed to look outside of herself for validation, and we never saw the bottle return to her life again. She blossomed into a beautiful character so full of life, owning what was her own, and I still LOVE the way she orchestrated Mandy's exit... No drunk who is still drinking could have done all of that...

SUE ELLEN EWING ROCKS MY WORLD!!!
